Hmm, 1966. Too early for anything I might know even if Marv did turn 20 that year...

LS #3……………………………………1966

1.Oh, who's to blame
That girl's just insane
Well nothin' I do don't seem to work
It only seems to make matters worse
Oh, please
#2 19th Nervous Breakdown – The Rolling Stones

Beatles or the Stones, well I’ve always thought the Beatles were better, but there’s no denying the fact that the Stones were great (so now if someone could just talk them into retiring)

2.When you squeeze me real tight
You make wrong things right
And I can't stop loving you
And I won't stop calling you
#1 B-A-B-Y – Carla Thomas

I was surpised that only 1 person got this correct, congrats to mellytu74 for getting it. I really love this song, but I had never heard of it until Rachel Sweet did it in the late 70’s. Both version are fantastic, but this one made it all the way to #1

3.When vague desire is the fire in the eyes of chicks
Whose sickness is the games they play
And when the masquerade is played and neighbor folks make jokes
As who is most to blame today
#7 Along Comes Mary – The Association

Never a big fan of this group, this was the only song by them I used to play back in my DJing days, I included it here because they say “chicks” in the song, and I find it funny considering how women are referred to now in songs.

4.Why dont you be a man about it
And set me free
Now you dont care a thing about me
Youre just using me
#1 You Keep Me Hangin’ On – The Supremes

Surprised how many people thought the title was ‘Set me Free’. I liked that TLITF gave Vanilla Fudge as the answer, only 1 year off with theire 1967 version. Side note about the Vanilla Fudge version, supposedly someone got the idea by mistakenly putting the Supreme’s 45 rpm version on the turntable at the 33 1/3 rpm speed, if you listen to it that way, it is almost identical to the Vanilla Fudge version. Of course to do that today you’d need to dust off your turntable and rummage through you 45’s.

5.But what can I do, I'm lonely too
And it makes me feel so good to know
You'll never leave me
#5 I Saw Her Again – The Mamas & The Papas

Really great song about infidelity within the group, Fleetwood Mac would expand on the idea about a decade later.

6.If I had my way
She'd be back today
But she don't intend
To see me again, Ooh-Ooh
What can I do
'Cause I-I-I-I-I'm feelin' blue
#4 Black Is Black – Los Bravos

I great one hit wonder, they say the lead singer sounds like Gene Pitney, I always thought it sounded like a girl was singing it, my apologies to Mr. Pitney.

7.I have my books
And my poetry to protect me
I am shielded in my armor
Hiding in my room
Safe within my womb
I touch no one and no one touches me
#3 I Am A Rock – Simon & Garfunkel

Paul Simon is one of the all-time great American songwriters, this song along with The Boxer is one of my favorite Simon & Garfunkel songs.

8.I should have known you'd bid me farewell
There's a lesson to be learned from this and I learned it very well
Now, I know you're not the only starfish in the sea
If I never hear your name again, it's all the same to me
#2 Red Rubber Ball – The Cyrkle

As was pointed at by TLITF, this song was indeed written by the above mentioned Paul Simon, what I didn’t know was that The Cyrkle were that they were involved with Brian Epstein The Beatles manager and supposedly John Lennon suggested a group name change to The Cyrkle clever a play on spelling a la The Beatles & The Byrds.

9.Something in your eyes was so inviting,
Something in you smile was so exciting,
Something in my heart,
Told me I must have you.
#1 Strangers in the Night – Frank Sinatra

Anyone who got this wrong should be ashamed of themselves, he’s The Chairman of the Board for crying out loud! And mini, I did sing it with the changed lyrics, although I didn’t do quite as loudly as the bartenders where I worked did.

10.As I walk this land with broken dreams
I have visions of many things
Love's happiness is just an illusion
Filled with sadness and confusion
#7 What Becomes of the Broken Hearted – Jimmy Ruffin

This has always been a favorite of mine, and I always think of it along with another song, The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore by The Walker Brothers, also from 1966. Jimmy Ruffin was the brother of David Ruffin who was in The Temptations, so I was surprised how many people thought it was not only The Four Tops, but also the song I’ll Be there.

Congratulations to mellytu for going 10 for 10!

#7 Along Comes Mary – The Association

This was written by Tandy Almer (aka Tandyn), who also wrote songs for The Hexagon Club shows in Washington, DC. Hexagon was the group I performed with -- and where I appeared as a live version of American Gothic in 1983. 19 years later, that experience helped me answer a question . . .

Tandy had an amazing way with rhyme scheme, rhythm, and word selection.

Oh, man! A top 10 right in my wheelhouse. of course, it could be because I am an old fart.

What Becomes of the Broken Hearted is a favorite of mine. too. GREAT slow cha-cha song at Wagner's or Chez Vous Ballroom.

So is B-A-B-Y. Somewhere I have a vintage Song Hits book with a story about carla and Rufus (Walkin' the Dog) Thomas and how she was carrying on the family tradition.

The Boxer is my favorite S&G song.

Well, I hunted it down, and I have Never Heard It. Ever. In 41 years, you'd think someone would have played it in my presence, but nope.

If they are the ones who sing Windy, I shall never forgive them. Ever.

It was Wendy. But they did Cherish, too.
Enough already. It's my fault! Get over it!

That'll be $10, please.
