Several I haven't heard of and I can't figure out where Jackson fits in, assuming you refer to the writer. Most of the others I recognize appear to be physicists or at least scientists of some sort. Perhaps there is a Shirley Jackson who is a physicist or scientist as well. Of course Pauling was more of a biochemist, not a physicist, so that muddys the waters a bit. And I don't think Gould was a physicist either, more of an evolutionary biologist I think. Maybe he dabbled in physics as well but I don't think so...

I will guess they all speculated in some fashion on the origins of life.

Comments: Since I screwed up the first names of Watson and Crick originally, I gave credit to those two names on the list to the people who played before I edited my mistake, regardless of their answers. That may not be everyone’s way of handling mistakes, but I’ve been saying for 20 years, (to my students) “I don’t feel like I can punish anyone for my mistakes,” so that’s the way I’m used to doing things. I also gave double-secret bonus points to the two people who caught and corrected my mistake before I did. Also, I wanted to include a contemporary scientist who wasn’t quite so well known, and wound up picking one who has the same name as a relatively famous author. Overly tricky, I’m afraid, but there you are.

Still, it's a legit name in a category with some other well-known names, so I can't call it a screwup, as I did with the first name fiasco.

Maddie actually had a quiz bowl question last week about Shirley Jackson, the author. The question basically asked, "this author was agorophobic and wrote The Lottery and died in '65. One of the kids buzzed in and said Charlotte Bronte and was mocked by the rest of the team for at least two or three minutes.
