Nobody get insulted! I guessed the BBs I thought I had a clue on and put the rest in at random.
littlebeast13 wrote:Here it is ladies and gentlemen, your 2009 Winter Lyrically Speaking Extravaganza finale! And as promised, it is all songs requested by you, the players! I chose one song from each of the 21 lists I received, drew names out at random to order the songs in this game, and here is your game! The list of submitting BB's is below... don't forget to guess at who submitted each song to get a bonus point! This game is open until Monday morning....

Good luck, and I hope you enjoyed this year's contest as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you!

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, and 1 point for identifying the BB who requested each song.....

BB List:

1. You can see the summit but you can't reach it
It's the last piece of the puzzle but you just can't make it fit
Doctor says you're cured but you still feel the pain
Aspirations in the clouds but your hopes go down the drain

Estonut

2. He was dancin' with a train
They were all in love with dyin'
They were drinking from a fountain
That was pourin' like an avalanche comin' down the mountain

KillerTomato

3. There's no return
Double helix in the sky tonight
Throw out the hardware
Let's do it right

Kroxquo

4. The Telex machine is kept so clean
And it types to a waiting world
And mother feels so shocked
Father's world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl

megaaddict

5. I used to come home late and not a minute too soon
Barking like a dog, howling at the moon
You'd be mad as an ol' red hen
Up all night wonderin' where I been

starfish

6. Now here you go again
You say you want your freedom
Well who am I to keep you down

Dreams, Fleetwood Mac. I could not remember who the Fleetwood Mac fan is. I think it's Kay.

7. have a secret to tell
From my electrical well
It's a simple message and
I'm leaving out the whistles and bells

mini

8. But if I seem to be confused, I didn't mean to be with you
And when you said I scared you, well I guess you scared me too
But we got lucky once before and I don't want to close the door
And if you're somewhere out there passed out on the floor

Passed out on the floor! Gotta be Clem.

9. Everybody wants respect, just a little bit
And everybody needs a chance once in a while
Everybody wants to be...

PanicinDetroit

10. Times have changed
Our kids are getting worse
They won't obey their parents
They just want to fart and curse!

TBone

11. I come from the county Waterford,
Near the village of Tramore,
I’ve been living at home since I was one,
And now I’m forty-four!

Here's to the loosers in the game
Heres to the soldiers of the bitter war

And I've just got to tell her
That I love her endlessly

Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

That they'd go away

Needles and Pins, The Searchers. I was a kid when I first heard this song and still turn the radio up when it comes on some oldies station. I looked it up to make sure of the original artist and saw that it was co-written by Sonny Bono! Wow! Oh yeah, this one came from Sprots.

Edited to remove an extra html tag
I thought I might do fairly well on this since I kind of know what everybody likes, but I don't know enough of the songs to put that knowledge to use! But I still want extra JJCP for showing my work.....

I was erasing the names as I used them, so hopefully there aren't any repeats and I got everybody because I just realized that I couldn't go back and check the list against my answers because I erased it. Ha!

1. You can see the summit but you can't reach it
It's the last piece of the puzzle but you just can't make it fit
Doctor says you're cured but you still feel the pain
Aspirations in the clouds but your hopes go down the drain

Starfish (sounds kind of 80's)

2. He was dancin' with a train
They were all in love with dyin'
They were drinking from a fountain
That was pourin' like an avalanche comin' down the mountain

Elwood (sort of blues type lyrics)

3. There's no return
Double helix in the sky tonight
Throw out the hardware
Let's do it right

Bob46187 (because he's first on the list)

4. The Telex machine is kept so clean
And it types to a waiting world
And mother feels so shocked
Father's world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl

Finally, one I know! I Don't Like Mondays - Tori Amos (or Bon Jovi) (or Shithouse Rats) - Fanny

5. I used to come home late and not a minute too soon
Barking like a dog, howling at the moon
You'd be mad as an ol' red hen
Up all night wonderin' where I been

You Ain't Much Fun Since I Quit Drinking - Toby Keith - Peacock (I think she likes C&W)

6. Now here you go again
You say you want your freedom
Well who am I to keep you down

Dreams - Fleetwood Mac - Kroxquo (I think he aced Caro's FM Day)

7. have a secret to tell
From my electrical well
It's a simple message and
I'm leaving out the whistles and bells

To Live is To Fly (sounds weird)

8. But if I seem to be confused, I didn't mean to be with you
And when you said I scared you, well I guess you scared me too
But we got lucky once before and I don't want to close the door
And if you're somewhere out there passed out on the floor

Joey - Concrete Blonde - Clem (going with the obvious, although it could be mini being funny)

9. Everybody wants respect, just a little bit
And everybody needs a chance once in a while
Everybody wants to be...

Respect - Erasure (although I don't think it is, but now that's in my head) - Panic in Detroit (for no apparent reason other than his was the first name I saw when I scrolled back up to the list)

10. Times have changed
Our kids are getting worse
They won't obey their parents
They just want to fart and curse!

Blame Canada - Sheila Brozlofsky (Kyle's Mom) - Megaaddict (he of the SP Jesus & Pals avatar)

11. I come from the county Waterford,
Near the village of Tramore,
I’ve been living at home since I was one,
And now I’m forty-four!

Marley (sounds like 18th century ballad stuff that he's always going on about)

12. Here's to the winners of the human race
Here's to the loosers in the game
Heres to the soldiers of the bitter war
Here's to the wall that bears their name

Estonut (because he's all about the typos and I don't see any BNL here)

13. I'm a lucky fella
And I've just got to tell her
That I love her endlessly

Love Grows Where My Rosemary Goes - Edison Lighthouse - Kiki (I think she has a sister named Rosemary and I can see her bopping to this BITD)

14. I heard two men talking on the radio in a crossfire kind of new reality show
Uncovering the ways to plan the next big attack
well they were counting down the ways to stab the brotha in the be right back after this

Carmelo Anthony (stabbing a brutha sounds so WB)

15. He ain't got no distractions
Can't hear those buzzers and bells,
Don't see lights a flashin'
Plays by sense of smell.

Pinball Wizard - The Who - KT (I think he had this in a Genius game and he commented something about it)

16. People around every corner
They seem to smile and say
We don't care what your name is boy
We'll never turn you away

Ferry Cross the Mersey - Gerry and the Pacemakers - Dave Senior (somebody said something about this a few days ago and I can't remember who!)

17. No mortal was meant to see such wonder
One look in the mirror told me so
Come darkness I'll see her again
Yes I'm gonna go 'cause now I know

I Love the Night - Blue Oyster Cult - Vandal (I don't know why I associate him with BOC, but I do)

18. I saw a tree-house on the outskirts of the farm
The power lines have floaters
So the airplanes won't get snagged
Bells are ringing through the town again
Children look up, all they hear is sky-blue, bells ringing

Mini (these lyrics are pretty vague and she has kids)

19. Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk

House of the RIsing Sun - The Animals - TBone (every bar band used to play this, my Dad's band did and I know I've played the damned thing more times than I can count)

20. He once owned a Harley Davidson and a Triumph Bonneville.
Counted his friends in burned-out spark plugs
and prays that he always will.

Hotseat or Bust (she seems like a biker chick to me, moreso than sprots anyway and those are the only two I have left. Ha!)

21. I saw her today, I saw her face
It was the face I loved and I knew
I had to run away and get down on my knees and pray
That they'd go away

Needles and Pins - I can't remember who did it originally, but I've got it on a Tom Petty record somewhere and I know Sonny Bono wrote it - Sprots (she's the only one left)
Push it real good!

No One Is To Blame - Howard Jones - ToLiveIsToFly
HJ had a few songs eventually, but I saw him in an early performance in the states where he was the opener for someone else (Thomas Dolby, IIRC). He played his big KROQ hit "What Is Love" a third of the way through (to a still-sparse crowd). Not having much of a repertoire, he played it again either as the final song or the single encore song. This, mind you, was in the standard 30-35 minute opening set. I've been to countless concerts, and I've never seen anyone else do that.

The third line makes this sound like a country song. I don't have much country music in my collection. Of all the BBs I have not yet matched, I think Pea may be more of a country music fan than others.

6. Now here you go again

Well who am I to keep you down

Dreams - Fleetwood Mac - KillerTomato
His iPod selections mentioned during some of his LS games seemed to mostly be pure, classic, rock and roll songs, like this one.

The first typo in this game that stuck out to me. And yes, I noticed "limousene" a few games ago, but I knew that lb would just say he pasted it as is. Interesting how the host is the only one not reading the lyrics.

Too Old to Rock 'N' Roll (Too Young to Die) - Jethro Tull - elwoodblues
JT put on a hell of a show in the 70s and 80s. When I last saw them in a small club in Santa Ana, Ian's voice was completely shot in the upper registers. He has adopted a technique where he points towards the ceiling when he's supposed to be hitting the high notes, as if to say "that's where my voice should be right now." It was such a shame to see that a once-great singer/entertainer had lost his voice.

Great series of LS, lb! It's a lot of work trying to solve them each day. I can't imagine the work involved in putting them together, especially when various themes come into play.

If you'd just compose the games using Word, you would have searchable copies in a single repository and you could try a feature called Spell-Check!

Before I give the answers, I'd just like to point out that since Sprots is planning on constructing a special LS game out of all of the unused requests, I pretty much chose which song I wanted out of everyone's list, regardless of where you had it ranked, thus why there were a lot of second and third string songs in this game. I apologize to anyone who thought I was snubbing their preferred song....

1. You can see the summit but you can't reach it
It's the last piece of the puzzle but you just can't make it fit
Doctor says you're cured but you still feel the pain
Aspirations in the clouds but your hopes go down the drain
No One Is To Blame - Howard Jones - DaveSenior

2. He was dancin' with a train
They were all in love with dyin'
They were drinking from a fountain
That was pourin' like an avalanche comin' down the mountain
Pepper - The Butthole Surfers - TBone (After all his Butthole Surfer gag answers, this one whould've been obvious to anyone who knew who this was.)

3. There's no return
Double helix in the sky tonight
Throw out the hardware
Let's do it right
Aja - Steely Dan - vandal (Aja is one of the major characters in vandal's first novel The Memory Box, and a clear choice from his request list, although he threw it in as his #4 song...)

4. The Telex machine is kept so clean
And it types to a waiting world
And mother feels so shocked
Father's world is rocked
And their thoughts turn to their own little girl
I Don't Like Mondays - The Shithouse, er, Boomtown Rats - Fanny (Anyone following along had to know this is one of my least favorite songs of all time, and mini and Fanny love to give me hell about it. Fanny coined Shithouse Rats as a gag answer in Kitty Sandwich's game in last year's LS, and that is now what I always call Geldof's band....)

5. I used to come home late and not a minute too soon
Barking like a dog, howling at the moon
You'd be mad as an ol' red hen
Up all night wonderin' where I been
You Ain't Much Fun - Toby Keith - Peacock

6. Now here you go again
You say you want your freedom
Well who am I to keep you down
Dreams - Fleetwood Mac - Bob78164

7. have a secret to tell
From my electrical well
It's a simple message and
I'm leaving out the whistles and bells
Birdhouse In Your Soul - They Might Be Giants - Kroxquo

8. But if I seem to be confused, I didn't mean to be with you
And when you said I scared you, well I guess you scared me too
But we got lucky once before and I don't want to close the door
And if you're somewhere out there passed out on the floor
Joey - Concrete Blonde - Clem (It's hard for me to keep Concrete Blonde and Four Non Blondes straight. I try to remember that CB did this excellent song and 4NB did that God-awful "What's Up".....)

9. Everybody wants respect, just a little bit
And everybody needs a chance once in a while
Everybody wants to be...
Closer To Free - Bodeans - Estonut (I don't think I'd ever used this song before, and wanted to since I liked it. I was unfamiliar with Esto's first choice, and though I liked the second choice, I already had one movie song in......)

10. Times have changed
Our kids are getting worse
They won't obey their parents
They just want to fart and curse!
Blame Canada - South Park Movie - megaaddict (.....this one)

11. I come from the county Waterford,
Near the village of Tramore,
I’ve been living at home since I was one,
And now I’m forty-four!
Born To Be A Bachelor - Gaelic Storm - Marley (I am shocked so many people knew this was submitted by Marley!)

12. Here's to the winners of the human race
Here's to the loosers in the game
Heres to the soldiers of the bitter war
Here's to the wall that bears their name
Let the Day Begin - The Call - starfish (This was Fishie's third request, but one I couldn't pass up...)

13. I'm a lucky fella
And I've just got to tell her
That I love her endlessly
Love Grows (Where My Rosemary Goes) - Edison Lighthouse - Carmelo (He probably jams to this while he's on one of his DUI joyrides....)

14. I heard two men talking on the radio in a crossfire kind of new reality show
Uncovering the ways to plan the next big attack
well they were counting down the ways to stab the brotha in the be right back after this
The Remedy - Jason Mraz - mini (One of these days, the Chuckie Fox Singers are gonna plant this song in the middle of one of Sir G's doom and gloom threads....)

15. He ain't got no distractions
Can't hear those buzzers and bells,
Don't see lights a flashin'
Plays by sense of smell.
Pinball Wizard - The Who - KT

16. People around every corner
They seem to smile and say
We don't care what your name is boy
We'll never turn you away
Ferry Cross the Mersey - Gerry & the Pacemakers - Kay

17. No mortal was meant to see such wonder
One look in the mirror told me so
Come darkness I'll see her again
Yes I'm gonna go 'cause now I know
I Love the Night - Blue Oyster Cult - Panic

18. I saw a tree-house on the outskirts of the farm
The power lines have floaters
So the airplanes won't get snagged
Bells are ringing through the town again
Children look up, all they hear is sky-blue, bells ringing
Driver 8 - REM - TLITF

19. Now the only thing a gambler needs
Is a suitcase and trunk
And the only time he's satisfied
Is when he's on a drunk
House of the Rising Sun - Animals - elwood

20. He once owned a Harley Davidson and a Triumph Bonneville.
Counted his friends in burned-out spark plugs
and prays that he always will.
Too Old To Rock & Roll (Too Young To Die) - Jethro Tull - HSoB (Fanny's logic on assigning this one cracked me up!)

21. I saw her today, I saw her face
It was the face I loved and I knew
I had to run away and get down on my knees and pray
That they'd go away
Needles & Pins - The Searchers - Sprots (I found out in chat Thursday night that Sprots' list got lost in the mail... so she gave me the songs in chat before I posted the game that night, and rather than reshuffle the order, I just stuck her song in at the end...)

JJC Points:

Everyone who thanked me for running LS got at least 2 JJC points. It never hurts to suck up, folks!

mini gets one last JJC point for vagueness...

Clem gets one final Supermax for another funny set of answers, and for having a few of his weird friends also drop by to say goodbye to the '09 LS. That was very touching....

Melly got an extra JJC point (3 in total) for putting Melo on the country song, which is even funnier than him requesting Edison Lighthouse....

TBone got the Supermax of 5 JJC's since I don't know if I gave him one all year despite the fact that even moreso that clem, TBone was the one player who consistently tried to make me laugh...

I enjoyed reading Fanny's reasoning behind how she assigned all 21 BB's, that she got a supermax of 5 as well...

And Estonut also gets the supermax since along with his appreciation of my game, he also busted me up with the way he nitpicked the typo in Let the Day Begin.....

And finally, The annual Shithouse Rats Award for the funniest post of the entire game, and a whopping 10 extra JJC points, goes to elwoodblues for this masterpiece... just narrowly beating out melly's answer to Song #6 in this post....

Points:

Confessor 17+2

mntetn 13+2
mini 28+1

I'm pleased, but not shocked. I have mentioned, from time to time, that I like Celtic music, and the lyrics you chose to use certainly suggested that by the Irish location. It looked like the title and artist would be a stumper for everyone, until Estonut came through! If you'd allow me, I'd award him all the points I've earned in this LS as a bonus for that one!

If you take back that JJCP, then I'd have a total of 33 JJCPs and 777 LS points, and those would be some good lucky numbers!

When I saw which lyrics you picked for my song, I figured a bunch of people would give my song to Melo. Then I saw an REM song, and I figured people who knew me would assign that to me. I tried steering Sirge towards the sunshine of The Remedy before, and it hasn't worked yet, so good luck to Chuck and Co with that project....

Yay for Fanny giving you Boomtown Rats! If Cocaine had shown up on the list, or Joey hadn't, I'd have been torn.

And, Joey, Concrete Blonde has a song that goes something like "tomorrow Wendy's gonna die," so they've got your number and know what you're planning... :P

Too Old To Rock & Roll (Too Young To Die) - Jethro Tull - HSoB (Fanny's logic on assigning this one cracked me up!)

Not half as much as it cracked me up, I'm sure! And although Fannie guessed correctly, I'm not so much a biker chick, as I am a classic rock chick!

Vroomvroom! I haven't been on a motorcycle since I broke my foot falling off of one over in Canyonlands about a million years ago.

Classic rock is my favorite too. Well done, Fan!

You're gonna love Clem's nuts!

Everybody loved my nuts until I got that stuff from my cousin.....
You should have dried them off with a ShamWow before they shrivelled up....

Pepper - The Butthole Surfers - TBone (After all his Butthole Surfer gag answers, this one whould've been obvious to anyone who knew who this was.)
Knowing who it was turned out to be too much of a stumbling block....

Joey - Concrete Blonde - Clem (It's hard for me to keep Concrete Blonde and Four Non Blondes straight. I try to remember that CB did this excellent song and 4NB did that God-awful "What's Up".....)
Concrete Blonde is the one with the lead singer who's a blonde but dyes her hair black (or did) and 4 Non Blondes are the lesbians. Linda Perry has written a lot of Pink's songs and I know she produced the first album at least. And, hey, I LOVE What's Up! Dumb title but they wouldn't let them use What's Going On.

Maybe I was right in my logic, I just mixed up Vandal and Panic!

Needles & Pins - The Searchers - Sprots (I found out in chat Thursday night that Sprots' list got lost in the mail... so she gave me the songs in chat before I posted the game that night, and rather than reshuffle the order, I just stuck her song in at the end...)
The Searchers! I always for some reason get this mixed up with a Dave Clark Five song, but I know it's not DC5, but I never remember who it actually is. So I always toss in the Sonny Bono Fun Fact instead. Ha!

WIthout looking at the links, I'm going to guess Camp Grenada and Atomic Dong....

Do you have a separate listing for how many points everybody got from the matching song and contributor part? Reading the answers I didn't think that I did too well on that, but I got pretty good points for knowing hardly any of the songs, so maybe I was better than I thought.
Push it real good!
