I don't think I have to tell you how they handle half an inch up here. Even the wet snow.

My pet peeve up in this neck of the woods - and I have a hunch Kusch, Spock or some of the others might know what I am saying: I am not sure which is more dangerous on a typical snowy highway up here...the idiots that go 70 MPH or the idiots that go 15 MPH.

If you've been through it, you will know.

They don't learn that once you start to slide on the ice, neither 4-wheel-drive nor all-wheel-drive help you all that much...until they are in the ditch on the side of the road.

Snow can have an immensely different set of physics and engineering behaviours, but we see them in high snow areas as well, and that is big time trouble for trivial amount of snow. This surprises me a bit. If I have time, I will read up on the topic.

And that only works when they are in the ditch greasy-side-down.

We got about half an inch also, after it finally quit raining. No snowplows, no nothing, and no problem.

It is nice living in the powder belt.

I am taking Sting to the airport tomorrow morning.

That is just in time for us to get a storm on Wednesday and then maybe again on Friday.

Good thing I don't have to go anywhere.

You're off by a bit. The jet stream has sped up. The snow will start during the day tomorrow then get heavy later at night. You may get freezing rain! It should be over by Wednesday morning when you'll get plain old rain.

Don't tarry in Tarrytown on your way home.

The freezing rain started about noon, and by 3:00 school had been cancelled for tomorrow. The stuff is supposed to continue falling all night. It took me 55 minutes to drive the 8+ miles home -- usually about a 15 min ride.

Just in case, I've got firewood, candles, water, plenty of food (for me AND the animals), and a good book to read.

As of last night, the forecast said we would be brushed by this storm, but the worst probably would dump on you. So far, though, we have had far more ice than expected, and virtually all the roads are scary. I had to break open the ice seal on my garbage cart to throw away the trash. I'm not planning on going anywhere for the next 40 hours or so.

The good news is that there aren't nearly as many tree branches left to fall this winter as last.

I stayed with a friend up near Lake Tahoe on Donner Summit. That's what it looked like after we shoveled from the house to our cars. This was during the worst storm since the Donner Party.

I just talked to my dad in east central Indiana. The have received a few inches since yesterday but not a lot of blowing and drifting. They have an accumulation of 6-8" on the ground. Their road hasn't been plowed but they hope it will be some time this week. Of course, there are only two houses on their mile of road and it crosses the county line so it has always been a low priority for either county.

Despite that my parents are off to fix meals for some relief agency at my dad's church tonight.

My sister and her family who live in southern Indiana between Louisville and Cincinnati have had a lot of ice and snow out of this storm. They live on a rural ridge road with lots of shoulder dropoffs that is treacherous in dry condition let alone with ice and snow. They are just staying home.
