My sincere condolences and sympathy for your loss, Fish. Only her body is gone. Her love and the influence that love had on you will live as long as you do.

Sorry to hear of your loss Fishie. Like many others here I have a story too.

My uncle called one Saturday Nov. 26th to be exact and told my son that Mom wasn't feeling well. I called her and she said she had felt terrible but had just thrown up and now felt better.

I had people coming that night to play cards and was making food and generally running around. I finally called her at 5:30 - line was busy. I figured she was talking to my uncle (her brother). I called again at 6:30 - still busy.

That's when we took off for her place. I knew something was wrong when we pulled up to her apartment and it was dark. I had a key and went in calling for her. We found her in bed.

The coroner said she likely died right after I talked to her.

Did I feel guilt that I didn't rush down there after I talked to her? You bet.

However, there was nothing we could have done. She went the way she wanted to with her cigarettes beside her. She was definitely getting to the point of going into a home and never had to do that.

Don't feel guilty about what you could or shouldn't have done.

Thanks, everybody, for your well wishes/thoughts/prayers. It was nice to read others' experiences and concerns.

As it turns out, I did not cut my vacation short to go to the funeral, and because of the weather, it was probably the right move. My brother and sister were planning on going up but couldn't because of the snow and ice. Had I tried to fly up to Baltimore and drive to NJ, it could have been quite dangerous. My guilt about not being there has subsided a bit, but I still have that twinge. I'm sure that will dissipate with time.

Again, thank you for your responses. They were just what I needed!
