Answers & Points - Lyrically Speaking - 1/19/09

#29 Post by littlebeast13 » Tue Jan 20, 2009 7:27 am

1. See the stone set in your eyes
See the thorn twist in your side
I wait for you
With Or Without You - U2 (Back in the day, the WWTBAM audition tests consisted of 30 put in order questions like the old phone game Q's. This was the very first question on my audition test, putting this song title in correct order.... perhaps BiT and Cal remember it....)

2. When you rolled up in the Escalade
Saw that truck you gave to the valet
Knew that it was game when you looked at me
Pulling up your sleeve so I could see the Rolley bling
Love Don't Cost a Thing - Jennifer Lopez (ScrabbleTed once posted a site that would give you the #1 song on the Billboard charts on any given date. We'd look up the day we were born, 18th birthdays, etc. Someone decided to look up the #1's for show dates. This was the #1 song on the charts 8 years ago this week....)

3. Somebody once told me the world is gonna roll me
I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed
She was looking kind of dumb with her finger and her thumb
In the shape of an "L" on her forehead
All Star - Smashmouth (Claire Edelstein, who was in the second of the two taping groups on 1/18/01I was in the first], got his question and it resulted in the very memorable WWTBAM moment of her and Regis both sitting their with their fingers making an L on their foreheads)

4. Well I'm heavenly blessed and worldly wise
I'm a peeping-tom techie with x-ray eyes
The Future's So Bright I Gotta Wear Shades - Timbuk3 (I had no cut & paste technology back in 2001, but I manually typed out the lyrics to this song as my final post before leaving for New York. Not that it did me any good, but it was the first lyrics I ever posted on the Bored....)

5. Siam's gonna be the witness
To the ultimate test of cerebral fitness
This grips me more than would a
Muddy old river or reclining Buddha
One Night in Bangkok - Murray Head (One of my favorite Wierd Al parodies I created was "One Night at The Empire", which of course was the hotel all WWTBAM contestants were put up in back in the day....)

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4442&p=45697#p45697

6. Trailer for sale or rent
Rooms to let...fifty cents.
No phone, no pool, no pets
I ain't got no cigarettes
King of the Road - Roger Miller (Kevin O'Neill, who was the carryover at the end of my show, got a question about this song as his first Q on the next show (for 32K). It inspired an impromptu recital of this song on the Bored, as Kevin (or I, had I gotten that #^@ movie FF right) had to ATA on it....

7. what you wanna ball with the kid
watch your step you might fall
trying to do what I did
mama-unh mama-unh mama come closer
in the middle of the club with the rub-a-dub, unh
Gettin' Jiggy With It - Will Smith (I just love this song, but as to its tie in with my show.... the warmup comedian at the time (Q, I guess it was just plain Q) got some white lady in the audience to sing the rap from The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and it may have been the funniest moment of the entire taping. Since this is my favorite Will Smith song, I have associated that moment with this....)

8. Now he's getting a tattoo
He's gettin' ink done
He asked for a '13', but they drew a '31'
Pretty Fly for a White Guy - The Offspring (As some may remember, when I got my 4 seconds of face time during the RoF intros, I flashed a "1" and "3" on my hands as a shoutout to the Bored. I spent a good chunk of time worrying about which hand I needed to have the one finger and which hand needed the three for it to show up correctly, else I end up flashing a 31....)

9. She bent down and turned around and gave me a wink
She said "I'm gonna make it up right here in the sink"
It smelled like turpentine, it looked like Indian ink
I held my nose, I closed my eyes, I took a drink
Love Potion #9 - The Searchers (and others) (Pretty self-explanitory, and yes, I did a Wierd Al parody for this one too.....)

10. Things look swell, Things look great,
Gonna have the whole world on a plate,
Starting here, Starting now
Everything's Coming up REEEEEEEEEEEEEGISSSSSS..... oops, I mean Roses - Ethel Merman (Yes, I was on the same show as Amy Turner, and unforutnately, the show's editor took the day off, as not even the dead air time from her Hot Seat run was cut out of the show, which resulted in 8 of us dying in the RoF that afternoon. Anyway, Amy (A longtime member of the GC) created this little ditty (Subbing Regis for Roses) for the show, and they let her belt it out after she got the 32K lunula question right. My ears have never recovered.....)

JJC Points:

Estonut gets a JJC point for the Turkish Baths...

TBone gets 2 JJC points, one for each of his humor answers (I especially loved Puff Daddy/Puffy Combs/P.Diddy/Diddy/Doo Wah Diddy Diddy.....)

Panic had a rare 3 point JJC answer with his LB Got a Tat on His Ass answer for The Offspring song. I loved it....

Weasel dropped in and got a JJC point just because he managed to beat the Seat 9 curse. I can be gracious and not jealous... :P

Clem was back to his usual relying on humor points, and got 3 JJC points for his efforts in this game....

Pea got 2 JJC points for offending me, mini, clem and Kay....

Kay got 3 JJC points because her comments on the game are just so damn funny in an unintentional way.....

Surely you must be mistaken, Dave Senior was positive that he really DID remember this one. Ha!

Even though I connected #10 with what I thought was your show, I still didn't get that there was a theme to this (even with the MM and the opening) and I didn't get the Love Potion #9 being song #9. Somebody must've slipped some Old Timer's in my coffee when I wasn't looking.....

LB, what is acceptable for the "artist" in your games? I assumed there had to be an actual recording of the version mentioned, yet people have responded with actors who (may or may not have) sang songs in movies and now this, actors singing songs on Broadway. Does an actual CD/LP recording have to exist, or are people getting credit for artists known to have sung songs anywhere? I have seen tons of bands/singers sing obscure covers in concert. Do those renditions count?

It's hard to say, especially on songs of this type that are most associated with musicals and such, but I am looking for people who are actually noted for performing the song, though I have accepted the musical it came from as an answer. I did not accept any of the Anchorman answers for Afternoon Delight, though I consider that song to be more of a "radio" song, and I want to know who actually recorded it, not who may have sung it in some later movie....

Thankfully, I seriously think there is not another musical-associated song in this LS.....

"Ron Burgundy" didn't sing anything, as that is a fictional character. Gene Wilder and/or Peter Boyle are real people who really sang the song in a movie that is a bedrock of popular culture.

Plus, anything by Irving Berlin is a "standard" which countless people have recorded, simply because of its longevity. Afternoon Delight is not.

I did not see Anchorman, did Will Ferrell actually sing the whole song?

PS I don't care anyway, because I didn't have either one of those. (And Clark Gable did indeed have an actual recording of Puttin' on the RItz. It was the first time I'd ever heard it, on the That's Entertainment! soundtrack LP my grandma gave me for Christmas when I was about 11. I still have it, if one needs proof). Ha!

Not in the movie but he did record the entire song separately for the soundtrack which is why I say it qualifies as a cover.

Speaking for myself (and for what I remember of lb's rules), it should be a recorded version. lb probably sang Sexyback in the shower this morning, but I bet he wouldn't accept that as the artist.

The above point is moot anyway, because it wasn't answered until it was too late (not ragging on ghost, as she likes to answer even if she's aware that it's too late for points).

Didn't you answer Ron Burgundy, though? Maybe he'll give you the point he takes away from you for the Gene WIlder/Peter Boyle answer. Ha!

It was the first time I'd ever heard it, on the That's Entertainment! soundtrack LP my grandma gave me for Christmas when I was about 11. I still have it, if one needs proof. Ha!
Not in the movie but he did record the entire song separately for the soundtrack which is why I say it qualifies as a cover.
Didn't you answer Ron Burgundy, though? Maybe he'll give you the point he takes away from you for the Gene WIlder/Peter Boyle answer. Ha!

Who cares? Let's be happy! We have a new president!
I answered both. Ha.

No hedging your bets! It's the New Hoyt Axton Rule that I just made up last week.

We can't be happy yet? Can I sweeten the pot? In two weeks we'll still have a new president but we'll also have new Super Bowl champions! (And by new, I mean a team that hasn't had it before.)

There. Happy time!

Tempting, but there was no Scrubs tonight so I'm not in a giving mood. It's not hedging bets if the two are the same person. C'mon and admit it Ms. Fanny. I am right.

Dude, you made me look it up! You answered Ron Burgundy and then mentioned Will Ferrell IN PARENS in your comments. Besides, they can't be the same person if one of them isn't a person.

Weak argument. .25 points, max.

Oh, but there is Scrubs tonight! I just finished catching up and watching all four episodes this season on abc.com. They have them in HD! Which is way cool since I don't get ABC in HD (all the other networks, but not ABC). (Hey, you didn't specify first run episodes on tv.)

Estonut wrote:LB, what is acceptable for the "artist" in your games?

If it's recorded and selling on Itunes, then that counts as a cover in my book and should in yours as well. It's just another piece of the conspiracy to keep points away from Clem...
So by extension, any American Idol performance sold on iTunes is a valid cover artist?

That's a good question because some American Idolists are very well known for their covers (e.g. Ruben Studdard - Flying Without Wings)

I'm talking about top 12 finalists, not winners with recording contracts.

That really is a good question, one that I don't think has ever come up since mp3s haven't been so prevalent until recent times.

I personally would say that it would need to be an actual recorded version that exists in a real format. Going back to lb's killer shower version of Sexyback, anybody can record themselves singing a song and even put it up on the internet for download. That doesn't mean they can be considered a singer that is legimately associated with that song.
