Do you want to give "safety" points to the President who abruptly aborted the FBI investigation into the terrorist bombing that took place near me and killed and maimed people I know? That guy had made previous concessions to earlier foreign terrorists who endangered and took American lives, and his policies made later, even more terrible, events possible.

I didn't feel safe. I felt profoundly uneasy.

SC:

I'll trade "that guy" for one who was warned of an attack, on American soil by Bin Laden, ignored it, and went back to cutting brush. There are no innocent politicians.

For the past 25-30 years, government has been about one thing and one thing only...making sure the "good times roll" and making sure those that make money...make more money.

And the people that should care about this don't.

Obama will be no different in this regard- no matter how much you want him to be.

You are hopelessly naive. You can't even articulate what "change we need" he's going to bring.

PS I forgot to add- those changes you talked about?

They didn't come from the government on down....or because we elected "the right person".
The things I mentioned, except slavery, are not then. They are now. They are things which have happened in the past 25-30 years to improve the lives of many Americans, and they're still happening -- environmental gains, gender neutral advances, and access for persons with disabilities.

Those changes would not have happened without governmental legislation, no matter how much you want it to be otherwise.

I have no interest in discussing Obama in this context, no matter how much you want me to. I intended only to derail your incorrect assertion that "The office decor changes...the policies do not...not in any meaningful way" and your new incorrect assertion above that "For the past 25-30 years, government has been about one thing and one thing only...making sure the 'good times roll' and making sure those that make money...make more money."

That does not make me hopelessly naive, no matter how much you want it to.

I don't think that was classified as a political belief. :P

Am I the only one who thinks that Barack Obama may be the most pragmatic President at least since Harry Truman, and maybe since James K. Polk. To that extent, you can actually see the grain of truth in what SSS says, because what Mr. Obama says and what he intends to do are often two very different things.

I agree with some things he says and does, disagree strongly with others, but to me it appears that pragmatism rules nearly every decision he makes.

I also have to add that I admired the quote I saw from him the other night, when a reporter asked him if he would start making ambassadorial appointments on merit (at least, the reporter's idea of merit), and not as political paybacks. Obama said something to the effect that it would be disingenuous of him to say that he would never make an ambassadorial appointment based on political capital. To come that close to truthspeaking is downright stunning, especially after the last eight years. Excuse me, sixteen.

Then I thought about President Bush saying it would be disingenuous of him to do or say something, and I have to admit it. I laughed, right out loud.
