21. John R. + ??????? = John R. Tunis

Phillip Roth. Roth used Tunis' Kid from Tompkinsville in American Pastoral.

Tunis also influenced Mark Harris' baseball trilogy, which includes Bang the Drum Slowly.

Since Saigon was in here, we should also be paying attention to former capitals or capitals of countries that no longer exist. Austin used to be a national capital when Texas was an independent republic; maybe something there?

Melly, you were looking for a Colombo/Columbo before. I found an Argentinian field hockey player named Maria Colombo (Maria Shriver is on the list), but I doubt very much she matches up with anybody.

Since my contributions have all been stretches in this puzzle, I just happened to notice there's an unused Patrick inthe puzzle, who is Spongebob's BFF in the cartoon. Patrick's last name is Star.... maybe the "star" being for how capitals are generally identified on maps?

Ever look through someone's filmography and find out they once played the title in a movie you never heard of:

61. Tiger Woods + 5. Patrick Swayze = Tiger Warsaw

100. Angelo Dundee + 32. Patrick McGoohan = Angela Muscat

Well, I'd heard of it (and seen it). In fact, this was one of the names (along with Joel Cairo) that made me start wondering if I could get enough matches to make a puzzle out of it.

I found a boxer named Al Asuncion, but he doesn't seem to match with any of the names on the list.

But never mind that: I also found a Maria Asuncion, Mexico's richest woman, who has ties to a certain brewery.

11. Maria Shriver + 90. Antonino Fernandez = Maria Asuncion

Well, here's a connection I didn't know about!
In 1971, Kahane aligned the JDL with the Italian-American Civil Rights League, created the previous year by the Italian American mob boss Joseph Colombo, head of the Colombo crime family.
92. Joe E. Brown + 13. Meir Kahane = Joe Colombo

I've been desperately Googling the remaining names, looking for any match. I learned these useless facts:
  • Joan Lunden was on a speaking tour with Tony Robbins for three years
  • Battlestar Galactica, starring Edward James Olmos, had deities called the Lords of Kobol, one of whom was named Athena
These are more promising:
  • Bruce Alger was a Republican congressman from Texas who sparred with Lyndon Johnson
  • Actor Danny De La Paz was in American Me directed by Edward James Olmos
This is a definite match:
  • Tony Tripoli was the producer of Fashion Police with Joan Rivers

7. David McCallum dropped out of the consolidation. He's either unused or should be matched with 98. Tom Hanks, which means 29. David Attenborough is unused.

... search, search, search ...

Eureka! McCallum played the title character in Sol Madrid.

I was actually thinking of Horatio Alger. But I didn't use foreign spellings of capitals.

One of the remaining cities is fairly obscure, but once you spot it, you will recognize immediately how it fits into the puzzle.

One of the remaining people is fairly obscure, and it may take some brute force once you get the puzzle down to the last two names (there's no clue in the wording of this sentence).

You won't be able to form the quartet using four of the remaining unsolved people in the puzzle. Someone has already hinted at how the quartet works a few days ago.

I think, then, that I was right about John Kenneth Galbraith being the linchpin of the quartet. We have one person with the first name John already, and now we're looking for someone with the first name Kenneth.

[edited]

On second thought, that would have to be a group of FIVE. Scratch that idea.

Just in case you all were wondering, I have been thinking about this some while I've been on vacation. I"m back now, but I still have absolutely nothing new to add. I've stared at the list of countries and their capitals, and I'm still coming up with nothing. So I haven't been ignoring you, or not playing.

Well, I just went through a list of every artist T-Bone Burnett every produced. And putting that together with the capital of Turks and Caicos, we get -

55. Bruce Cabot + 88. T-Bone Burnett = Bruce Cockburn
