I got a chuckle out of seeing the Ultrathon avatar yesterday, as of all of my "regular" avatars I had prior to the ES era, this is probably the one I had up for the least amount of time. I didn't think anyone would remember it, and if anyone got it, it would probably be either connecting it as a product in my household chemicals department, or just noting the fact that I seemed to be not answering this one. I put it up on April Fools Day 2008, and I think it was gone by mid-month, but the fool I was celebrating was the product itself. From my 2004 list of the worst products to ever come across the shelves in my department (Of which Ultrathon was the runaway #1 winner).....
And the granddaddy of them all. The item by which all future dog items will be judged.....
Ultrathon Insect Repellant: From the makers of 3M, this was one of the first new items to be spawned by the West Nile scare of the Summer of 2002. The Wal must've bet the house on this being the really big item of 2003, because they ordered tons of it for each store, and advertised the heck out of it on the in-store TV. But it was originally priced at $5.47, which was even more per ounce than a can of the king of insect repellants, Off. Sorry 3M, but you don't just enter the market and immediately price yourself higher than the king, thinking that your past history of inventing Post It notes is gonna win you any clout. To this very day 2 year later, we still have repack boxes filled with all the Ultrathon that was sent to us 2 years ago. And its all the original stuff, because we never sold enough for any new Ultrathon to be ordered. The store, slow to swallow its pride, didn't finally allow us to clearance this stuff until this past September, and by then it was way too late. At least all the extra Off, and Cutter, and Bug Out they ordered in response to the silly West Nile panic eventually went out and is long gone. Not this little yellow can. Congratulations to 3M for offering up a product so bad that it will be very hard for anything in the future to top it.
A postscript...... about a year after I posted this, I saw a bunch of Ultrathon at a local Big Lots closeout store. This was not very long after all those re-pack boxes of Ultrathon which we were unable to get rid of finally disappeared from out of our store..... we still have yet to have a bigger albatross of a product in my department.....
