[quote="franktangredi"][quote="franktangredi"][quote="franktangredi"] The STAPLES one seems unlikely because the connection should be a different person.

Do NOT ask me what I meant by that. OF COURSE Mark has to be right about this one!

7. Wheat and 35. Rice are STAPLES
C.S. (Clive Staples) Lewis goes with 60. J.R.R. Tolkien

That leaves us with just one triple left, and I still like the DUKES one.

How about the name of another candy company?

Mind you, I'm too groggy to go looking for it.

This is going very well now! It's been so long, I'm having trouble remembering the matches myself, but I only see one complete pair on the consolidation that I didn't think of at all, and just two other answers (one in a pair, one in a triple) that I used in a different place. Everything else is right, I think.

Here's another one:

16. Warwick is a CASTLE
Irene Castle goes with 38. Ginger Rogers

(That knocks out my DUKES triple.)

GINGER Rogers must do double duty in this puzzle. Is anyone on the list associated with the Spice Girls? Or Elihu Root? Or can Ginger and Porter go together to make Beers?

While Jordan is a land, it's more usually thought of as a river, and I think it's more likely one of the rivers in this puzzle than Clyde.

Clyde, however, is a Firth, which leads to Colin Firth, who goes with Helen Fielding.

THE LAST TRIPLE and updated consolidation

#160 Post by franktangredi » Thu Jul 10, 2008 6:39 pm

As SSS pointed out Forbes was a Field. But the second Field completes our last triple:

18. Forbes and 42. Turner are FIELDS
W.C. Fields goes with 39. Freddie Bartholomew

One of the pairs below is not what Smiler had in mind and another uses a different person in the pair than he had in mind. I suspect the former might the the Boll/Cotton Mather pair since Boll really isn't a kind of cotton and Cotton Mather predated Jonathan Edwards.

*******************************

Combine the answers to the following 88 questions to make 31 pairs and 10 trios, according to a Tangredi, or principle you must discover. Four answers will be used twice, each in two different capacities.

Okay, I admit to googling on this one. I checked to see if Elam had any meaning independent of Jack. And lo, there were references to the ancient Middle Eastern "Land of Elam." (I need to read the Old Testament more.) So I think my Land pair was the one Smiler said used a different element that he had intended.

31. Elam is a LAND
Edwin Land goes with 2. George Eastman

franktangredi wrote:As SSS pointed out Forbes was a Field.

I guess it's acceptable now to seek help. I went to look at Van Morrison's biography, and discovered he was actually married to somebody named JANET PLANET! Jeez!

17. Mars is a PLANET
Janet Planet goes with 9. Van Morrison

She was an angel of the first degree!

Everything is right, except I still had Jordan used in a different place (that was the dumb choice I mentioned, forgetting it is an obvious river - maybe I should read the Old Testament too). You are right that Cotton is the one I didn't use, but yours doesn't interfere with any other matches because I had Jonathan Edwards paired with a different person used a second time. That one is also one of the more obscure ones, so yours is just as good if not better.

And I also realized that the LENA is a river. So I'll just slot in Lena Olin in place of Barbara Jordan.

Jordan. Hmmmm. Somebody named Almond?

I'm also relieved that everything was right, because I was worried when I refreshed myself on the other members of the House Judiciary Committe who served with Barbara Jordan: not only was there a FISH, there was also a FLOWERS!

GINGER is an HERB. Is one of the people on the list below closely associated with somebody named Herb? If so, it's very likely to be one of the sports figures.

KeyArena is the now former home of the Seattle Supersonics. So...

58. Key is an ARENA
Bruce Arena (ex-coach of the U.S. Men's Soccer team) goes with 15. Brian McBride

Hmmmm. Jordan is also a Kingdom. The only person I can think of to fit that, though, is hurdler Roger Kingdom, and I don't see anyone on the list that would seem to match up with him. (Well, he and Dara Torres were teammates on the '84 and '88 Olympic teams, but that's awfully tenuous...)

I agree on the Kingdom one. Seems more likely that Smiler would have matched him with another track star, rather than a competitor in a different area, if that's who he had in mind.

I still can't help thinking Alan Dershowitz is going to somehow match up with Ron Silver, but I can't make any of the available names yield SILVER. (I think POUND was confirmed to go with CASH.) If only there were somebody on the list named Spoon....

Dara Torres often swims against Emily SILVER, if that'll help. Unless Smiler's even better than I think, and he already knows that Torres is going to win silver medals in a few weeks...

A cursory glance at the BBBL standings will reveal Smiler's competence at predicting athletic performances.

I used Roger Kingdom a game or two ago with Robert Reich so I didn't use him this time, but you are on the right track.

I just noticed on the Bored Reference Thread that this game was never completed. Back when it was active, I felt too busy (which is not to say I WAS too busy) to attack it. Anyhow, I think I got a couple of the remaining ones.

I saw this one right away: 1. Torres is a STRAIT; George Strait goes with 55. Conway Twitty

This one took some research, since I'd never heard of William Allen White: 5. Jordan is a NATION; Carry Nation goes with 10. William Allen White

For anybody else who didn't know, White was a nationally famous Kansas journalist who ended up supporting Carry Nation in his editorials, after initially calling her "crazy as a bedbug".

That seems to leave only Terry Fox, Alan Dershowitz, and Jonathan Edwards unused.

I guess Smiler is even better than he thinks! Dara Torres ended up winning three medals in Beijing -- all of them silver.
