Are we looking at a (Whitaker) Chambers / Alger Hiss connection?
Yes we are:

2. MICKEY MANTLE + 66. GERALD FORD = WHITEY FORD
38. OZZIE SMITH + 55. WERNER HERZOG = WHITEY HERZOG
94. ABRAHAM LINCOLN + 57. WALT KELLY = WALT WHITMAN
? + 32. SLIM PICKENS = SLIM WHITMAN
92. ALAN TRAMMELL + 53. LOU HOLTZ = LOU WHITAKER

Amazingly, all three of Whitey Ford, Whitey Herzog, and Lou Whitaker had crossed my mind over the past few days and I didn't put it together somehow.

There are two people on the list named James. One of them will go with 97. WILL ROGERS to give us JAMES WHITMORE, who toured in a one-man show as Will Rogers.

45. DIONNE WARWICK + 27. SAM HOUSTON = WHITNEY HOUSTON

62. BERTRAND RUSSELL+ 22. ALFRED LORD TENNYSON = ALFRED NORTH WHITEHEAD

33. ROBERT MONTGOMERY + 14. MAY ROBSON = DAME MAY WHITTY (they both got Oscar nominations for Night Must Fall)

95. GENE RODDENBERRY + 31. GRACE METALIOUS = GRACE LEE WHITNEY

Either Johnny Carson or Johnny Mercer will yield JOHNNY WHITTAKER to go with 25. BRIAN KEITH

7. WILLIAM LLOYD GARRISON is going to end up going with JOHN GREENLEAF WHITTIER

16. CHARLES EVANS HUGHES + 70. KURT RUSSELL = CHARLES WHITMAN

Either Margaret Mitchell or Margaret Bourke-White is going to go with 50. JOHNNY MERCER for MARGARET WHITING

Which leaves 25. BRIAN KEITH + 82. JOHNNY CARSON = JOHNNY WHITAKER

64. JOSEPHINE BAKER + 44. LYNN SWANN = LYNN WHITFIELD

93. MARTIN SHEEN + 59. BRADLEY MANNING = BRADLEY WHITFORD

Meg Ryan is going to yield MEG WHITMAN, I think. Maybe #21 isn't Jeff Bezos, but Pierre Omidyar, the founder of eBay. (We did a bio of him in our Economics text a few years back.)

Okay, that's all for now.

9. STEVE WOZNIAK leads to STEVE WHITMIRE.

He's now the voice of KERMIT THE FROG.

Too bad Beaver Cleaver isn't on the list - we could make Whitey Whitney. I guess that would have to be a single.

I'm not finding Forest Whitaker, either, but here's a different Whitaker:

You're not finding him because I couldn't find anyone else whose first name was Forest with one R.

That's why Whitey Bulger isn't here either.

Who could Spartacus have been associated with named Whitsomething? Is there somebody with first name Spartacus? I guess it could be a film producer or writer.

1) See, I go to class and all heck breaks loose.

2) Isn't Spartacus on TV played by a Whitfield? Whitsomething? Andy Whitfield, maybe.

No, MEG WHITMAN goes with JERRY BROWN. Brown defeated Whitman in the 2010 California gubernatorial election.

JEFF BEZOS is correct. He yiels JEFF WHITTY to go with ARMISTEAD MAUPIN.

48. He and Mickey Spillane were the first two celebrity spokesmen for Miller Lite Beer.
BUBBA SMITH? ROSEY GRIER?
I wonder if this could actually be SHELDON LEONARD.

We need a Sheldon to make SHELDON WHITEHOUSE, who defeated LINCOLN CHAFEE in the 2006 Senate race in Rhode Island.

e.e. cummings gives us WHITNEY CUMMINGS.

She created "Two Broke Girls", so she connects to KAT DENNINGS.

PERNELL ROBERTS leads to the boxer PERNELL WHITAKER, who will undoubtedly connect to the right answer to #79, which could be either Oscar de la Hoya or Felix Trinidad (his two most prominent opponents).

And I will bet you a dollar that HARRY REID will lead to HARRY WHITTINGTON.

He was the guy DICK CHENEY shot in the face.

Oh, good. Now I can stop looking for matches for Dick Whittington, Lord Mayor of London.

I'd help on this but I can't give a whit.

EUGENE DEBS leads to EUGENE WHITNEY. He was a pioneer in the field of hydroelectric power (read: dams), so he should connect to MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE.

That then leaves MARGARET MITCHELL to make MARGARET WHITING.

JAMIE OLIVER leads to former Mississippi congresscritter JAMIE WHITTEN.

He held the title of "Dean of the House", which is now held by JOHN DINGELL.

My last one for now:

KEITH OLBERMANN leads to country singer KEITH WHITLEY, who was married to LORRIE MORGAN.
