You give me too much credit. I was there last December for the Beef Bowl and I only had the normal cut of prime rib and the creamed spinach.

Include me in the "ranch dressing" crowd for spicy fries. As for MickeyD's I prefer the spicy mustard for dipping. At Wendy's I ask for packets of their hot chili seasoning, mix that with ketchup and use that as a dipping sauce.

Hmm, I never thought of mixing the chili oil with ketchup for the fries at Wendy's - what a good idea! I ALWAYS put the chili oil on my Wendy's burgers - I soak it into the inside of the bun halves. Yum. Of course now I am wickedly craving a Wendys double stack, and since there are no 24-hour ones nearby I'll have to make a trip for lunch tomorrow. I'd sure love to try this 5 Guys y'all praise so supremely, but alas- none around here. Until then I'll have to be satisfied with Wendy's - IMHO the next best fresh beef burger in these parts. As I've posted in the past, I still crave the Steak and Shake burgers, but haven't had one in several decades.

They are pretty good, but I just don't get all the hoopla. And the fries taste kinda card-boardy to me... don't they?

I agree about In-N-Out. Good, but highly overrated. I wouldn't drive far out of my way to get one. And their fries are the worst. Freshly-cut potatoes, but they use some kind of healthy oil that just makes them warm and soggy.

It is now my favorite fast-food burger. I still can't resist the hot dogs once in a while, though!!!

I have to agree with you on this one.

Maybe it's because the types of guys who tend to use Axe use the body spray in place of a shower. But it just seems like anyone who uses it uses way too much, and it just reeks. I have definitely never done a pole dance around a drain pipe when the guy upstairs uses it like in the commercial...in fact, I run the other way when I smell it. Sorry, Christie.

If this is the real Portillo's chain from Chicago (which it probably is), you should try the Italian Beef! "Wet with hot and sweet" (dipped/soaked in the beef juice and covered with chopped jardinera (sp?) and sauteed green peppers). It's decadent. I've had their dogs, but have never tried their burger. I'll have to now. Oh, and if they have the fries covered in Merkt cheese (which I doubt), get 'em!!!

I tried the Italian Beef once, but made the mistake of having it "take out" with about an 8-minute drive to get home. By the time I got home, it was one soggy, dripping mess. I've been meaning to give it another try and having it there, but the dogs and burgers are hard to ignore. I also like their soups. They typically have a choice of 3, and they taste like they're made fresh there every day, not prepared and heated up.

Their (California) menu includes "cheese fries" but doesn't mention "Merkt." I don't know what that is, so I assume it's Chicagoan.

Yup, that's the place. It's in that 91/215/60/10 mess in between Riverside and Beaumont. They've been fixing it up for years...

I was driving back from Palm Springs a few Novembers ago and it started snowing right on/next to the 60 in Moreno Valley. Needless to say, that was SO unusual that lots of boneheads stopped on the freeway to marvel at it/play in it.

Esto, that's the way it tastes best!!

(I order it that way on purpose, and eat it with a knife and fork. mmm)

Merkt cheese is a thick, grainy, extra sharp cheddar spread kinda thing, and I think you can only find it around Chicago/Wisconsin. It's the best ever. I called the Portillo's near you and they said they ship everything in from Chicago, but they don't actually use the Merkt cheese there either. Oh well...

There's a small chain here in the San Fernando Valley called "QT Chicago Dogs" that is very good. They also ship in everything from Chicago, including the Italian Beef, jardinera peppers, dogs, Polish, etc. The beefs are really good there. But unfortunately, no Merkt. It's too expensive, they've told me.
