QoD Weekend -- August 29
QoD Weekend August 29 -- "Famous Last Words"
It's been a real pleasure to be your co-QoD Meister along with Marley, your main Meister, who has done a great job. Now it's up to me to round out the month, and I hope you enjoy today's valedictory game.
Below are the last reported words of eight famous people before they kicked the proverbial bucket. (There are conflicting reports in some cases as to the exact wording, but the quotes below are widely reported.) Your mission is simple: tell me who they are (or were, as the case may be).
This game will be open through Sunday, August 31, until midnight Eastern time. Put your answers in a spoiler box, and avoid all outside sources or be struck dead on the spot. OK, so I made up that last part.
1. "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." Or "It is finished." Or "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabacthani?"
2. "Be sure to play 'Blessed Lord' tonight — play it real pretty."
3. "I have not told half of what I saw."
4. "Dying is easy. Comedy is hard."
5. "Thomas Jefferson… still survi—"
6. "Crito, we ought to offer a cock to Asclepius. See to it, and don't forget."
7. "I'll finally get to see Marilyn."
And last but not least:
8. "Don't worry. It's not loaded."

Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Thank you for putting up with me this month, even if you didn't award me any humor points. Marley's been overly generous to me anyway. You know, it's funny, I just realized I first came to be on the Bored back in February 2002 to spice up that QoD. The Q-Meister that month....... the one and only JBillyGirl.
I don't think you gave me any points that month either.

1. "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." Or "It is finished." Or "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabacthani?" -- Jesus Christ. The four books of the Gospel differ on his last words; "Father, into thy hands..." (which is also in Psalm 31) comes from Luke, "It is finished" is from John, and "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabacthani?" (Aramaic for "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" from Psalm 21) appears in both Matthew and Mark.
2. "Be sure to play 'Blessed Lord' tonight — play it real pretty." -- Martin Luther King, Jr. King said these words to saxophonist and pastor Ben Branch, who was playing at an event King planned to attend that night. King was shot shortly afterward.
3. "I have not told half of what I saw." -- Marco Polo. Some historians (a minority) have challenged Polo's story, saying that he may have gotten his information from second-hand accounts of traders and passed them off as his own. If this were true, perhaps he hadn't seen half of what he told...
4. "Dying is easy. Comedy is hard." -- The answer I had in mind was George Bernard Shaw, but after doing a bit of digging it seems hard to pin it down on anyone for certain, with the possible exception of Sir Donald Wolfit, who I never heard of and would never expect you to know. Therefore everyone gets credit on this question, whether you answered or not. Happy Labor Day!
5. "Thomas Jefferson… still survi—" -- John Adams. Both former presidents died on July 4, 1826, fifty years to the day after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson's last words seem to have been either "This is the Fourth?" or "No, doctor, nothing more."
6. "Crito, we ought to offer a cock to Asclepius. See to it, and don't forget." -- Socrates. This was reported by Plato in his work Phaedo. Crito was an old friend of Socrates, and Asclepius was the Greek god of medicine and healing.
7. "I'll finally get to see Marilyn." -- Joe DiMaggio. He had been Marilyn Monroe's second of three husbands. DiMaggio had flowers delivered to Marilyn's grave each week for years after her death.
8. "Don't worry. It's not loaded." -- Terry Kath. (I knew this one would be tough, but I wasn't sure how tough.) He was the original lead guitarist for the group Chicago. A gun enthusiast, Kath was displaying a gun to a friend, who told him to be careful. Kath showed the empty magazine to the friend and assured him it wasn't loaded, putting the gun to his head and pulling the trigger. Unfortunately there was a bullet in the chamber. This ignominious end landed him an early Darwin Award for removing himself from the gene pool.
I'll post final scores later today.

Here are the scores for the final Weekend QoD. Note: All of these scores include 2 points for the un-pin-downable “Dying is easy” quote.
wintergreen 12
plasticene 12
etaoin 12
AnnieCamaro 12
AJ 10
Catfish 10
Uly 10
jsuchard 10
Sprots 10
T-Bone 10
frogman 10
kroxquo 8
tmitsss 8
Rexer 8
tanstaafl 8
elwoodblues 6
jarnon 6
LFHP 2 (since he posted in the thread, he gets two real points for #4, as does everyone else)
Speaking of LFHP, he has alerted me that I’ve been remiss in not awarding humor points. The truth is I’ve never quite known how to handle humor points. A number of your answers really have made me laugh out loud, and if I were to give humor points for the month, I would hand them out thusly:
Rexer 2 (for Cletus and nolu hankispanki)
jsuchard 1 (my Democratic soul couldn’t resist the George Bush quote from the future)
tanstaafl 2 (ROFL on Monica Lewinsky and Worldus Overpopulatus)
T-Bone 1 (for a well-placed Liberace)
frogman 1 (for “Nolo Pregamo”)
Sprots 1 (for the “Church of What’s Happenin’ Now”)
AnnieCamaro 0 (I’d really, really like to give her 1 or 2 points for her ever-delightful four-footed perspective, but she is so dang smart and so high up in the standings that she doesn’t need my help)
And last but not least…
LFHP ∞, or the square root thereof, for his infinite brilliance. Well, OK, maybe not, ’cause he’d be in the lead without a single correct answer. So instead, in the spirit of Marley’s decimal inclinations, I would give him Avogadro’s number, 6.0221415, minus the 10-to-the-23rd part.
I’ll leave it up to Marley whether or not he includes the humor points, since these are appearing so late in the game, and I don’t want them to affect the standings too much.
It’s been great fun co-hosting the QoD this month, and I hope you’ve enjoyed playing, even though the questions have been tough sometimes. Now I’m looking forward to being back in the trenches as a regular player in September.

Oh, sure, give me a problem at the last minute! Did I include a column in my spreadsheet for generic humor points not assigned to a particular day's QoD? No, I did not!JBillyGirl wrote:I’ll leave it up to Marley whether or not he includes the humor points, since these are appearing so late in the game, and I don’t want them to affect the standings too much.
I'll post the results as we have them from the daily totals. Folks who care about these humor points can add'em in theirownselves.
