DoND

Is tonight's episode the one that Howie has been promoting so heavily, where someone finally wins the $1 million?

Does anyone care?

I'll bet you that the new run of shows will have a million dollar winner, but it won't be tonight.

Yes, this run will have a $1M winner because Howie has already said so. Possibly even more than one because at one point he says "winners".

I listened to the promo many times during the Olympics and each time he said "winners" (plural).

So how many cases had to contain $1MM before they got a winner? 20? Pfeh!
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

Spoiler
It didn't happen last night.

The contestant had two cases remaining: $5,000 and $1,000,000. She turned down $530,000 to go for the million.

She won only $5,000, a trip to New York City, and a Broadway audition.

Just in case...
Spoiler
As much as I enjoyed seeing the contestant realize a dream and admire her gumption in going all the way (after chiding other contestants for not doing so), I think it was foolish of her to turn down the $530,000.

And next week we have been guaranteed that someone will win the million dollars.

A Broadway audition? Are you saying the contestant was a What Else?

And I agree with ear; when you've got no control over the outcome, that's a terrifying bet to make. And at that level, the banker's offer was finally better than the expected value playing on!

Spoiler
In the Syndie version, Contestants who are not choosing suit cases are taking the place of the spokemodels, holding the cases that are chosen.

A wannabe What Else. I don't know if I have a passion so strong (other than family) that I would trade half a million to experience. She was guaranteed a walk on part in Hairspray and an audition with the casting director which had been a life long dream. I credit her for having something she wanted to experience so strongly that she was willing to exchange that for a guaranteed $530K. The upside was she had a 50/50 chance of having a $1M and her dream come true.

We should all be so lucky.

So the Broadway audition was an incentive prize that she only got if she went for the $1 million?

I know it wouldn't be any temptation for me. :P

I watched the end of last night's show.
Spoiler
And next week we have been guaranteed that someone will win the million dollars.

What stood out to me was
Spoiler
they kept saying someone wins 'the million' or 'one million' or 'a million.' Not once did I hear of someone winning "one million dollars"

But it would make an interesting talking point that might get you on Millionaire.

Riiiiiight!

And all it would take is being casted onto a show that doesn't even pretend to have an interest in anything other than telegenics, demographics and "energy".

But Marley, if you were in her situation, with 2 cases left, one of which was valued at $1 million and the other at $5000, and the Banker offered you a guaranteed opportunity to be on BAM if you went all the way, would you?

About two summers ago I was in Australia for work and happened to see a few episodes of the Aussie version of DoND - it was a half-hour version that aired M-F. The number of cases IIRC was smaller, maybe 20. No models - cases were held by potential contestents - all of which had a shot at being the 'picker' - I forgot how they selected who got to play, I think it was some sort of numerical question and the one with the closest value to the correct on got to play (I may be wrong on the selection process).

The top prize I think was around 100,000 US or something like that. In addition to money I think one case had a car or some other physical prize (maybe there were more then 1 non-cash prize).

When calling out a case to pick, the person holding the case got to try to guess the amount in their case - if they guessed correctly they won a bonus amount. It appeared that all the contestents were there in pairs, either a family member or a friend, so they would save that persons case towards the end so they would have a better odds in guessing their cases contents.

Finally, there was some sort of gamble at the end about making a bet on your case but I can't remember much about that aspect as well.

I don't know if the American syndie version will follow these rules or not - but it was an interesting twist.

There would be a single game played in the half-hour and they didn't drag out the opening of cases - so it moved pretty quickly. I always wondered what they would do for the remaining time if the person took the first offer.

Hmmmm. Can I think about it?

The premises are so unlikely--particulary that they'd cast me on DoND, in the first place--that's it's hard to say. Yes, the offer would be tempting, but since I'm one of those who say it's primarily about the money, I don't know if it would be tempting enough.
