I have been aware of this condition in some friends for a long time, but had never experienced it myself until tonight. It is not fun, although I could stand it once I realized what it was.
It began with throat-clearing that did not work, then a burning feeling in the area just below my throat (or probably technically part of it but in that hollow part where the neck meets the chest). I felt as if I had thrown up, in that I had the burny feeling and nasty taste, but not a bit of nausea (thank goodness for that, at least). I described all this to roomie, who said it was likely acid reflux.
I tried some Chloraseptic, which felt better for a second, and then worse. More burny, somehow. A Rolaid did not help much, and there was some Mylanta but that takes time.
I got alarmed when my throat felt like it was closing up and I could not speak without much effort. I got roomie to call the 24-hour nurse, who said if I could not swallow my own saliva, or breathe properly, I should get to the ER immediately, as that would be an allergic reaction. The more she talked, the more I realized the throat-closing feeling was just anxiety, not anything physiological.
That got better, and she said I could take one of his Prilosec.
I will try to sleep sitting up tonight, and hope it gets better. The anxiety part got better, anyway. Normally it is just a matter of putting a name to the problem, to prevent that.

And the next part is to try to identify the culprit. Write down everything you had to eat or srink before the attack, just to be sure. Then, if it happens again, you can compare notes to see if it might be food-related. Sometimes it isn't, but if it is, you'll know how to alter your diet.
Just don't be too quick to blame it one food or one spice.

Oh, yesterday was a travesty of poor food choices, ending with the too-many hot dogs with chili from the cart across the street on Panther game days.mrkelley23 wrote:And the next part is to try to identify the culprit. The culprit was not in question.
I do feel better today, though the sleeping upright part was not restful.

"GER" used to be a daily event in my life as well. Didn't really matter what I ate. My proton pump inhibitor of choice was protonix. Worked great but then the insurance forced me to nexium. It works almost as well although not as well as the protonix did.T_Bone0806 wrote:I have this problem.
Nexium is my friend.
I have had zero issues since I started taking it.
I hear protonix has now gone generic. Maybe I can switch back!
