1. Start the race.
2. Finish the race.
3. Celebrate if you won.

Do not reverse #2 and #3. You cost yourself a sub-9.6 time at the Olympics.

I agree. I will not root for him in the future.

Though he was truly amazing to watch.

Should he, in the next few months injure himself and never be able to compete again, he set a world record that will stand for 1 year rather than 10. Not that I wish him harm, but in the finals, especially at the Olympics, you shoud give 100%.

Again, everyone forgets that this is not his "last" race. He's running the 200 and the relay so he has six or seven more races to go. He hasn't run the 100 much in earlier competitions, so no one knows if he might get winded or run out of gas. And you don't have to go too far back to Tyson Gay in the Olympic qualifying, to see what can happen to an athlete who competes in both races. Gay won the 100 easily and injured himself in 200 qualifying which probably cost him a medal here.

Sorry, I don't buy it. He was clearly watching himself on the big screens, had to know how his body was reacting, and started easing up and thumping his chest 15 meters or more from the end. He only beat the world record by 0.03 seconds. It wouldn't have taken a whole lot more chest thumping to have missed the record entirely. Yes, he still would have won. But the media, and probably his own countrymen, would have seriously questioned the premature celebration.

If you're that friggin' worried over getting injured in one race so you can't compete in a second, don't run the first one. And if you're not worried, run all out until you cross the finish line in every race you're in. Aren't most of the sports apparel commercials we've been seeing about giving it your all? This is the Olympics, Jack! Run your ass off!

Give him a break. When you are new to a planet, its difficult to adjust to all its customs and practices at once while still trying to keep your true identity secret. He'll figure it out after awhile. It not like he can come out and just say, "That's how we do it on Krypton."

I was reading or hearing somewhere (probably NPR, seeing/hearing its me we're talking about doing the reading/hearing) that chest-puffing-out-&-thumping is one of those inborn traits of all people. Now, I do not recollect ever having done this, but I've never won a running race, either. I wouldn't win one if I was the only one in it, 'cause I can't run more than a few feet at a time.

Putting your hand up to cover your eyes at brow level as a sign of being upset is another "inborn gesture", so much so that blind people, who cannot be shielding their eyes from much by it, do it. Babies in the womb do it. I dunno if they puff out their chests & thump them; prolly. I could look it up (& you can too!).

I thought it was kinda goofy, but I enjoyed watching Mr. Bolt. So there!

The former-contender announcer couldn't get over how much time Bolt had to have cost himself by the display.

You know, horses, when they win a race, often prance around the track some more just for fun. (It could be but) I don't think that's all dictated by the rider. Who would probably be thumping their chest if they didn't think the horse's owners wouldn't shoot them on the spot for it.

Mr. Bolt owns his own self; he can thump if he wants.
