Wedding Blog: T minus ten and counting

#1 Post by gsabc » Thu Jul 31, 2008 7:24 am

The stress is getting to BD now in a big way. Her (undiagnosed) autistic charge has been acting up since the regular school year ended. She suspects that the mom, who is in denial about the autism, is doing something at home to negate all BD's work during the year. The speech therapist had BD take extra time to write out a description of the behavior, supposedly to be edited and sent to the mom from a "professional". But after seeing it, the therapist went all squidgy and said it was too strong, it's not right to send, and blah, blah, blah. BD lost it, in part because of the time wasted, in part because of the waste of her good efforts with the child, and in large part because of all the other stuff going on.

Turns out she is getting really nervous about the upcoming move. I had been wondering about that. You recall that this was the child who didn't want to go to a college just over the MA border into NY, because it was too far away. Now she's going to move and live 3000 miles away from home, friends and family! Still no job, knowing no one except FSIL and those of his friends whom she has met, no definite housing, an entirely different climate, an entirely different lifestyle. I think we've passed nervous and gone straight into panic. Getting her stuff packed is going slowly. This may be because of the reality of the situation setting in. What will she need immediately, what can she store away, should we completely collapse the shelves or just break them apart into components? Oh my God, I'm leaving my home!

GW didn't have quite the transition, for all that I dragged her halfway across the country. She had, to a large extent, mentally left home when she went off to college and later to grad school. I'm sure she missed hearth and home, but there didn't seem to be the stress that BD is now having. Maybe she just didn't show it to me. Maybe I was just my typical oblivious self and didn't see it. I dunno. GW and I are handling most of the last minute details to help her concentrate on those things that only she can do. But it's hard on all of us.

I repeat my stock tip: Buy Kimberly Clark. Demand for Kleenex will be up dramatically in the next three weeks.
I just ordered chicken and an egg from Amazon. I'll let you know.

I am wondering if these are BD's sentiments or your (desired)interpretation of BD's sentiments.

After all, she is not moving or living 3000 miles from home and family. Her home and family is in California, with her husband.

Yes, she is entering a new chapter of her life, but it will be the best chapter so far of her life, I think that you will agree. :)

Nope. Her sentiments, as I got them through GW (Dad never gets the emotional stuff first). And yes, I agree that the change will be for the better.

Change is always scary. This much change can be outright frightening. I am sure she will get through it. But the getting is still traumatic.

I'm sure she is sad and scared and happy, all at the same time. I was scared when I finally moved out of my house. I lived away from home at college, and I couldn't wait to move out when I was done. So I got an apartment and packed up all my stuff...and then when I got to it, I begged my mom to turn the car around and let me come back home!

I quickly got over it. Granted it wasn't as far as a move and I wasn't getting married. I think she's probably on stress overload right now, I couldn't imagine making all of those big changes at once. She must be a tough cookie to be able to pull all of that off! Hang in there, all of you, this is a happy time as she starts her new life...

Do they still make the Little Travelers boxes with pictures on the back of people in national costumes?

On topic: If she's never been far from home and I assume his family isn't close by since you hadn't met them, how did they meet in the first place?

Since I don't know what you're talking about, I assume not!

We have a bunch of White Cloud 4-pack tissues... the same feature they sent in last BTS that we finally sold all of about 2 months ago....

I used to love those!!!! I think they still have little boxes, I don't know if they have those? We get the little boxes at work but they're just plain gray, I guess they're more professional that way. I buy Puffs To Go myself, they're cool because they're in little resealable pouches and they're actually full size tissues.

BITD the school supply list always had a small box of tissues (along with the old shirt for fingerpainting. We never fingerpainted in school, but still we always had to have the old shirt).

People always got the little packs in plastic or a little box. The little boxes were called "Little Traveler" packs and I think had pictures of world flags all around it. On the bottom was a picture of a person in the national costume of their country (kind of like Miss Universe) and it would have a blurb under it with facts about the country.

Gotta collect 'em all! Our version of Pokemon cards. Ha!

All I remember are the different themed pencil boxes.

I never, NEVER took a box of Kleenex to school when I was a kid. And now they require the kids to have antibacterial wipes! We're gonna raise a whole generation of kids that are too susceptible to germs....

I can't find a picture online so I guess that means they don't make them anymore (is it Traveler or Traveller? I tried both ways).

So thanks for confirming my memory so I don't wonder if it was just an acid flashback.

I couldn't find it either. I don't remember what they were called, but I remember what they looked like. I couldn't find anything online. Apparently old Kleenex boxes are not collectible or memorable to others!

I actually phoned my sister to ask her and she confirms that they were Little Travel(l)er. Maybe they weren't Kleenex, but I also tried with just a generic 'tissue' and got nothing.

I'm not a very good searcher, anyway. I should have just posed it as a question and let the google hounds do the work for me. Ha!

Little Travellers has to be Kleenex, because a lot of hits come up with that brand name..... just not the particular box you remember....

I second the motion. Er, question. How did they meet?

I wonder if LB has something here. Given the plethora of docs around, obviously anything I say has to be taken with several 50-pound blocks of salt . . . I don't use antibacterial wipes or take antibiotics. My assumption is that I have my own antibodies ready to go zinging through my bloodstream at the speed of light and save me if I ever get exposed to the avian flu or something. Disclaimer -- I do not engage in behavior putting me at risk for HIV. I might make some changes then.

Now, they have kids bring 2 big boxes of tissues (i.e. Kleenex), a container of pop-up Clorex wipes, and big container of Purell hand sanitizer. Plus, the old shirt for painting (no finger painting).

Plus, a ton of other things.
