QoD July 4, 2008
2 points per correct answer, 10 points if you get all four correct. Answer with a Spoiler tag in one post in this thread before noon CDT on Monday, July 7.
No outside sources allowed. Just take your best guess.
You may have noticed there has been sort of a theme in the QoD so far this month. Today may or may not follow that theme. Don’t think that particular answers are more or less likely based on that theme. That’s all I’m saying. If you hadn’t noticed the theme, then carry on.
1. The text of the Declaration of Independence starts with what word?
2. What Province is the Declaration referring to when it says “For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies”?
3. What day of the week was July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia, PA?
4. On July 2, 1776 representatives of twelve of the thirteen colonies voted in favor of the resolution of independence. Which colony abstained?

I thought I was pretty good at history, but today's QOD has made me feel very inadequate.

Well, I thought there was a theme on July 1, but I was wrong. Ha!
1. The text of the Declaration of Independence starts with what word?
When
2. What Province is the Declaration referring to when it says “For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies”?
The 33rd Province
I had no idea there were provinces in the Declaration. I feel like such a Royalist right now. I'm watching National Treasure again tonight, though. So that should get rid of that. Ha!
3. What day of the week was July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia, PA?
Crap, that was still Old Style, so I can't use the math trick for figuring it out. I think I've narrowed it to a 1 in 3 shot, so I'll say Thursday.
4. On July 2, 1776 representatives of twelve of the thirteen colonies voted in favor of the resolution of independence. Which colony abstained?
I"m going with Rhode Island, but I think that was the Constitution.

You may have noticed there has been sort of a theme in the QoD so far this month. Today may or may not follow that theme. Don’t think that particular answers are more or less likely based on that theme. That’s all I’m saying. If you hadn’t noticed the theme, then carry on.

First three days were basically geography, people/history, science and sports for the four Q's, kinda like trivial pursuit. Today deviates from that. Not sure that is the "theme" you mean.
1. The text of the Declaration of Independence starts with what word?
Presuming you mean the body of the text the first word is "when".
2. What Province is the Declaration referring to when it says “For abolishing the free System of English Laws in a neighbouring Province, establishing therein an Arbitrary government, and enlarging its Boundaries so as to render it at once an example and fit instrument for introducing the same absolute rule into these Colonies”?
Not sure but Canada seems likely.
3. What day of the week was July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia, PA?
Pushing my skills in the use of the doomsday calendar to the limit. But since July 4th is always the same as doomsday for the year I believe it was a Thursday which seems to match what I recall it being.
4. On July 2, 1776 representatives of twelve of the thirteen colonies voted in favor of the resolution of independence. Which colony abstained?

ANSWERS
QoD July 4, 2008
Quebec (aka Canada at the time. The French had called it Canada but then the British started calling it Quebec after 1763 so in 1776 Quebec pretty much equaled Canada. BTW, the British enlarged Quebec so that it included the trans-Applachian territories. That was the part that really torked off the colonials since they were all set to claim that land themselves.)
3. What day of the week was July 4, 1776 in Philadelphia, PA?
Thursday since the British had adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752. In places still under the Julian calendar like Russia and Greece July 4, 1776 would have been a Monday )
4. On July 2, 1776 representatives of twelve of the thirteen colonies voted in favor of the resolution of independence. Which colony abstained?
New York (they didn't feel they had authorization to vote for independence until later)
POINTS
A few more 10s today. Great job by those folks! I think finally got the balance about right. We'll see about the second week.
