Are there idiots in your area who stop on the freeway to watch the fireworks?kayrharris wrote:I got to see two different fireworks displays on my drive home from the airport.
I was at the Angels/Blue Jays game and it was followed by a fireworks show. A segment of the 57 freeway is visible way beyond left to center field. During the post-game fireworks, I noticed about 10 cars that had pulled over and stopped to watch them.
After the game, I headed up the 5 freeway towards Los Angeles. Now this is not a small freeway like the 57. This is the main north/south artery for the whole state. As I passed the Disneyland area, I saw hundreds of cars stopped to watch Disneyland's fireworks. In the right-side emergency lane, there were cars whose occupants had gotten out and were sitting on the concrete barrier of the freeway. I saw cars parked on the gorepoints between the right lane and on-ramp lanes. Whenever I see something and think "that's the stupidest thing I've ever seen," it doesn't take long for someone else to come along and take the cake.

I can top that. Do they shut down major highways in your area for fireworks shows?Estonut wrote:Are there idiots in your area who stop on the freeway to watch the fireworks?kayrharris wrote:I got to see two different fireworks displays on my drive home from the airport.

I was at the D'backs/Cards game last July 4th, and when it got over about a half an hour before the big fireworks display at the Arch was supposed to start, I rushed to get the hell out of downtown and back across the river before it started. I found out, much to my horror, that literally every road downtown leading to a bridge across the river was blocked off! And when I finally did manage to weasel my way around to get on I-70 to take the main bridge back across the river, I got to the bridge just as the fireworks were starting..... and the cops had the bridge shut down!!!! I had to sit and idle on the on ramp for who knows how long after already doing a lot of sitting in traffic trying to find a way back to Illinois. I was pissed beyond belief over being held hostage by the city of St. Louis.....

I had to enter the UPC code for 150 oz. Purex Lavender scented detergent into our little handheld devices to make a label, and can't believe I hadn't noticed what the last 5 digits of the UPC were before...

I used to live a little over a mile due north of Memorial Park, which is where they had the big fireworks display every year with the Colorado Springs Symphony (I could even hear the music). My house was in a direct line to the area where they shot off the fireworks, so I literally just had to step out my front door.Estonut wrote:Are there idiots in your area who stop on the freeway to watch the fireworks?kayrharris wrote:I got to see two different fireworks displays on my drive home from the airport.

As the years went on, I didn't like it because people started to just pull over anywhere on the street, in the street, in people's driveways, then get out and sit on top of their cars, in the parking strips and even on people's front lawns!
What is it about friggin' fireworks that make people lose all sense of lawfulness, propriety, recognition of other people's property, etc?
Now I live about a mile from Sky Sox Stadium, where they have the other big fireworks display, so all I have to do is go out on my back deck. However, for the last several years, the Sky Sox have had a thing called "Fireworks Friday". So there's a pretty big fireworks show every Friday night that they have a home game. Therefore, fireworks are no longer special and they don't mean that much on Fourth of July and New Year's Eve (when they shoot them off from the top of Pikes Peak).

Purex has lavender now? I love Simple Pleasures and I like to get it, but only when it's on a ridiculous sale because the regular price is way too high. Purex is much more reasonable. Now they need to come out with that rose scent that Simple Pleasures has. Make that happen, please!littlebeast13 wrote:I had to enter the UPC code for 150 oz. Purex has had Lavender for a few years now. It replaced Sunshine Breeze (Which had the same purple cap and everything.... they probably just changed the name and not the scent!). They must not carry it in your area if you haven't seen it before.
Simple Pleasures is indeed ridiculous. The 100 oz. size (That's 100 oz. non-concentrated, because I hate doing all the conversions after learning all the non-c numbers for so many years!) is the same price as the 150 oz. regular Tide flavors.....

I think I've had Purex fabric softener in Lavender before (I thought I had some now, but I just checked and it's GV Colour-Safe Bleach in Lavender), but never noticed the detergent had it. I see that fabric softener is now being referred to in some places as 'fabric enhancer'.littlebeast13 wrote:Here's Fanny! wrote:Purex has lavender now? Btw, I don't see tv as much as hear it, but I was watching something the other night when the first commercial came on and I saw that stupid yellow splat in the lower right hand corner!
I think the splat is what they had left after they stomped all over the yellow happy face that had served them just fine for the last 4570680433 years.

Since I live in the south, we don't even have freeways....we just call them plain ole interstates around here.Estonut wrote:Are there idiots in your area who stop on the freeway to watch the fireworks?kayrharris wrote:I got to see two different fireworks displays on my drive home from the airport.

There are so many bad drivers on the road & who knows how many drunks out on the 4th of July that it's almost a death wish to do something like that!

Jeff's parents have a house on a hill in Redondo Beach. From the roof, you can see about five or six fireworks displays. On a major street near their house, people were standing waiting for the fireworks to start at 9:00. There were hundreds of people and some were standing in the street.Estonut wrote:Are there idiots in your area who stop on the freeway to watch the fireworks?kayrharris wrote:I got to see two different fireworks displays on my drive home from the airport.

By 9:30, the Redondo Beach fireworks hadn't started, so they started leaving. I think that the fireworks actually started around 9:40.

Suitguy is not bitter.
feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive
The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

Vests? Check! Viagra? Check! OK, Time to Boom Boom!
Hey baby i'd like to talk to you
How about coming back to my room for a little boom boom
You keep coming to me
I can dig your dynamite
Know the way you move
Get in the groove
You're driving me crazy, crazy for you
Second time you moved me
It's time for us to boom boom
You can come right close to me
And feel the burning fire
All the time you got me
It's fine for us to boom boom
If you see the spark in me
And feel my strong desire
Boom boom boom
Let's go back to my room
So we can do it all night
And you can make me feel right
Boom boom boom
Let's go back to my room
So we can do it all night
And you can make me feel right
Do the honor to me
Don't you know i like to bite
Get to the view
Closer to you
You're driving me crazy, crazy for you

I am one of those firing away each 4th. We have a family gathering each year on the weekend nearest the 4th and traditionally invite friends and neighbors to come for food and fireworks as we burn up several hundred dollars worth of mortars (Like everything else it seems to get more expensive every year). Generally my brother and I are in charge of trying to blow off our fingers. Once again we were unsuccessful. We came closest last year when a launch tube came loose and fell over just as a mortar launched, striking my brother square in the calf! Quite the bruise but no extremities were lost...
This year was the first in a while where it occurred on the 4th. Once again the fireworks gods were kind as we got a nice shower earlier in the afternoon that helped to reduce the chances we would set the house and woods on fire, especially given the ongoing drought. Without the shower we probably would have had to cancel the show. I don't know how long we have done it but it has to be more than 10 years so it would have been disappointing to cancel.
But I do have a good sized property and the neighbors were all invited so hopefully we didn't keep any one awake!
