Nelly, just use your avatar, but, um, don't send the words.

Congrats and best of luck in NYC!

I wonder if the PAF cutback was partly due to most contestants not having more than three anyway.

What it will do is cut down on contestants' abilities to have PAFs in "shifts". With 3, you have a lot less leeway to split up the day between them. That is a long time to have to sit by a landline phone!! A couple that I initially used were only available for 3 or 4 hours, but with 5, it was worth the risk...with 3, not so much!!

But on the bright side, instead of committing all five to one day and possible more, people can now commit 3 to one day and have 2 backups if they carryover.

I just got a call from a 212 area code and my heart skipped a beat. Yes, it was WWTBAM and they gave me a taping date! It is Friday, July 25th. Expected air week of Sept. 22.

So now I need some Phone-A-Friends ASAP - people on the bored have mentioned they might be available so I'm asking if anyone wants to be my friend.

It appears that there are some differences this year - one of them is that there are only 3 PAFs, and that I need to provide within 5 business days a photo and a release form for each of my PAF.

So if you:
- Don't mind potentially having you photo plastered over the airwaves
- Are able to get a photo of yourself before the end of next week
- Are willing to sign a release by the end of next week
- Have a lot of time free on Friday, July 25th with the possiblity of free time on Monday, the 28th
- A willingness to spend some time doing practice PAF trials
- A land-line phone, fast computer/internet connection, smart, good googling/wiki skills, and the desire to help me out...

Then please let me know ASAP.

I've been keeping my personal info pretty close to the vest since I didn't know if TPTB monitor the bored and if so if they feel being active on the bored is a plus or a minus, but now that I got the call, I feel free to give some more details about myself:

I currently live in Austin, Tx (for nearly 12 years now) - prior to that I lived 8 years in Switzerland. I was born and grew up in the Catskill Mountain region of NY State - and the original Woodstock festival took place litterally around-the-block from where I lived in 1969 (I was 11 at the time).

I have 10 wonderful children and a fantastic wife.

I've participated for a few years in the International O'Henry Pun-Off competition held in Austin every spring - I mention this because both interviewrs asked about it during my audition - so for those trying out - listing anything in which you have experience 'performinng' in front of a crowd/audience might give you a leg up.

I'm another 1958er (which I noticed just came up in another thread about a significant number of us who were born that year are on the bored) and had my 50th birthday this past February.

So, thanks so far for all the great advice I've recieved to date from this bored - and seriously, if you can be a PAF, please let me know ASAP.

---Jay
I'd be happy to help. I shouldn't have any trouble getting you a photograph and the dates don't appear to be a problem. I would welcome the opportunity to practice. I have a bit of experience with the PAF process.

Congratulations on getting The Call! --Bob

Congratulations from another 1958-er.

I've helped a few people in the past by designing the Phone-a-Friend training. I've got an almost unlimited supply of questions.

If you provide me what general areas where you think you might require some PAF help (your weaknesses), we can come up with some questions at various levels.

Also, provide us with the specific expertise of the people you have chosen (their strengths), and we can tailor questions for those situations as well.

I probably saw you at the Pun-Off if you participated this year. I was there this year for a while and bought a few of the used books they were selling. It was on Kentucky Derby Day, right? I think I left to watch the Derby at B.D. Riley's, then returned to the Pun-Off.

I competed in the Pun-Off about 20 years ago, but never mentioned that at any game show auditions. That was probably a good hook, and may be the biggest reason they chose you for the show.

I also live in Austin and have been on WWTBAM, so I'd be glad to meet and discuss strategy or whatever kind of advice, coaching, etc., you need.

I can also steer you to the best weekly pub quizzes in Austin, having done most of them many times. It might be a good way to pump up your competitive trivia juices. It also might be a good excuse for getting a few hours away from your ten kids!

I missed the Pun-Off this past May since I was out-of-town but have participated the previous 3 years (2005-2007). I would love to do the pub-trivia round and would also love it if anyone on the BB could join us as well.

I will be in Ft. Lauderdale, FL this coming week (Mon, Tues and Wed. evening) and I played a couple of nights this past week there as well at a place called Bru's on US 1/Federal near Atlantic Ave. If anyone is in the Ft. Lauderdale area (or Miami, West Palm Beach, etc) I would love to find a good location to practice and chat.

So I plan on hitting the BuzzTime/NTN circuit in Austin and Ft. Laurdale if anyone has any suggestions - I've only played about a dozen times over the past few yesrs - so any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks,

---Jay

-Obnoxious literal response On-
The answer to your questions in order are: Yes and No. And your welcome.
-Obnoxious literal response Off-

The O'Henry Pun-Off compitition is held every spring in Austin, Tx. It celebrated it's 30th anniversary in 2007. It is held in a small park located behind the O'Henry house and consists of 2 seperate compitions of 32 contestents. The first one everyone delivers a 1 1/2 to 2 minute original piece that is judged from 1 to 10 by a panel of judges - highest score is the winner. The second is the Pun-Off where 2 contestents go on stage and a random topic is displayed, then each person had 5 seconds (i think) to come up with a pun using a word or words based on the topic. The next person has to do the same, but cannot reuse the same word even if it is punned differently, and so it goes back and forth until a contestent can't think of a pun or reuses a pun. The winner moves up to the next round of 16, then 8, 4 and then to 2 contestents and then the champion. So it is fairly high pressure that requires quick thinking and causes lots of painful groans from the audience.

If you want to know more about it go to: http://www.punpunpun.com for everything you ever wanted to know and much more.

Check out the link that Frogman provided. There are also several videos from the O Henry Pun Off on YouTube, which will give you a sense of the atmosphere. Here's a starting point:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VexFjZfgVqo

It's probably not to everyone's taste, but it's a unique Austin tradition and that's reason enough for me to support it. For many of the competitors, it's something they look forward to and prepare for all year.

Under the pressure of a 5 second clock, most of the puns are just lame, or not even real puns. My problem as a competitor was that I was too focused on trying to think of good puns. But this is a contest that rewards quantity more than quality.

Just a random thought.

People often ask about what they should study in the brief time left until they tape. My advice is to immerse yourself in the pop culture of the moment. Many of the questions in your stack are being written (and tweaked) right now. Review the past year in television and make sure you know the movie blockbusters of the past couple of months.

Considering your show will be broadcast in September, questions about this presidential election cycle (primaries) would still be germane.

Memorizing vice-presidents' wives isn't likely to be useful at this point.
