Day 2 in California

#1 Post by kayrharris » Mon Jun 30, 2008 7:29 am

We were all asleep by 10:00PM last night, so now we're all awake by 6AM this morning! Fitness room and breakfast will be first on the list. Nice indoor pool and hot tub here as well.

Tour of Alcatraz is on our day list plus all that other typical touristy stuff, then another baseball game tonight in SF.

Hope I stay awake for the ballgame!

Oooh! I have always wanted to tour Alcatraz!! I actually had a trip planned years ago to do this with a girlfriend, but we never got to actually doing it.

Make sure and take notes and give me a full report!
Spoiler

Ellyn booked the trip. I'm sitting here wondering if you actually get on the island or the boat just takes you closer to it? Suppose I should check that out.

I'll have my camera and report back when I can. :)

Here we are pre-sunburn. Well, me anyway, since I'm the one who choose not to use sunscreen!

You go onto the island.

It is fascinating and creepy.

I heard once that sometimes former inmates conduct tours.

Aren't you supposed to be too busy to post?
I am about 25% sure of this.

You go onto the island and you can do a guided tour or the self guided tour. I don't remember why but I chose to do the self-guided. It might have been the timing of it.

Although I think I spent most of the time wanting to get back to land to go to Ghirardhelli...best hot fudge brownie sundae on earth!! Luckily they have Ghirardhelli ice cream shops in other cities otherwise I'd have to go back to SF annually to get my fix! :)

Ellyn got tired and is taking a nap. Sorry Nitrah!

Ghirardhelli is on our list for sure. That will be after Alcatraz. Might have to skip lunch, but it will be worth it!

Definitely skip lunch!! Although there are some tempting items on the pier on the way to the ferry for Alcatraz. I can't remember if there is any type of concession on the island, so you may want to make sure you have drinks and any snacks you might want before you get over there.

I can't remember what else I did out there that was fun. I had the best Chinese food ever in Chinatown, but I have no memory of which restaurant.

I spent a lot of time in Sausalito, but I have a cousin who lives there so that's why. I took a few trips into SF but spent most of the time across the bay, then did trips to Sacramento (to see family), Napa, Carmel and Monterey.

Enjoy your trip!!!

That sounds like a great trip. I've been to all those places at different times (except Sacramento) and loved all of it! Napa is on the list for an October trip. We were there the last week of October last year and the weather was perfect!

Carmel is one of the most beautiful spots I've ever seen and the Monterey aquarium is top notch as well.

Touring Alcatraz is still on my list. The last time I was in San Francisco, the prison areas were being remodeled to make them safer for visitors. We took a harbor tour which wasn't particularly exciting, but at least we came away knowing the meaning of the phrase "the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco."

Yes, I forgot it does get quite cold out there. Get a sourdough breadbowl full of soup to take on the ferry, that would keep you warm!!

(In case you can't tell I define most of my trips by the food I eat!!) :P

Well, we did have a bite to eat at Boudin today. The tomato soup was really good. We ate outside and it was very windy. I felt like I had a workout just trying to keep my food from blowing off the table!

We haven't made the chocolate trip yet. That will be tomorrow. My chenille hooded top came in very handy all day and at the ball game tonight. We were chilled to the bone by the time we left.

We feel like we've logged in more than enough Presidential Points to eat chocolate tomorrow. 8)
