#40. "Stand" - Lenny Kravitz (2011)

One of the bigger stars of the 90's was still going strong well into the new millennium, and this infectious groovy pop hit was a joy that appeared a couple times on the early Mecca CD's in 2013. The song was written about a friend of Kravitz's who overcame being paralyzed from the waist down to walk again. A critic in the Wiki article compared his singing style in this one to classic Elvis Costello, which is funny because it's true...

#39. "Never Been in Love" - Cobra Starship, ft. Icona Pop (2014)

The group probably best remembered for recording the title track for the Samuel L. Jackson vehicle Snakes on a Plane teamed up with the duo Icona Pop to record this upbeat song about falling in love that made one of the final Mecca CD's in 2015. The piano riff is ripped straight from the 1998 Fatboy Slim hit "Praise You"....

#38. "Little Jesus Sweetly Sleep" - David Shelley (2005)

There were two Mecca Christmas CD's during the CD era, and this really cool Kenny G-like saxophone instrumental appeared on both of them. It drove me absolutely nuts not knowing what the song was and who recorded it, because I really loved it! Fortunately for me, the CD's were never destroyed like they were supposed to upon being decommissioned, and when I discovered they were still collecting dust on top of a cabinet in the store's electrical room, I took advantage of the chaos that ensued during the early days of the pandemic to take them into my collection, where I was finally able to play them on my computer and get this song's title and composer! David Shelley, at least this David Shelley, doesn't even have a Wikipedia page. But he does have a Top 40 Mecca 100 hit...

#37. "Too Cool To Dance" - Eden xo (2014)

Straight up infectious dance pop, reminiscent of something Madonna might have done early in her career. This one made the rounds of the playlist on Mecca Radio in the late 10's and caught my ear enough to check it out...

#36. "Mama Used To Say" - Junior (1982)

Oh, those songs that used to seemingly only play in the 5 AM hour in the early 2020's! So many obscure treasures, like this one! This was actually a #30 hit on the Hot 100 in 1982, but pretty much nobody remembered it. I absolutely love Junior Giscombe's growl when he says "Mama" in the chorus of this insightful song about how we're always in such a rush to grow up as a child, then long for those younger years upon reaching the challenges of adulthood...
