No, I didn't want to start a parallel thread.

After tonight, I am gonna put my money on David Cook. I am also thinking that there may be a male / female finale despite what Simon said and that Archie may be going home tomorrow.

I liked all three of Syesha's performances and two out of three of Cook's. I am now bored with Archie as he seems to be a one-trick pony at this point.

I would love to see the upset shocker as we did with Daughtry last year.

A very bland show tonight..noone flat out Pepe le Pew'd it, but noone overwhelmed me either.

THE GOOD:

1-David A. "And So it Goes". Did very very well on the acapella part, but lost a point with me for some unnecessary vocal runs. It's a simple heart-on-sleeve song that wasn't designed for vocal gymnastics. I also think he's a bit short on the life experiences to really connect with the lyric.
Still, he did a good job overall. A-

2-David C. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". I really did not have much hope for this one. When David found out that Simon had chosen this song for him, he looked like a guy who just found out that his blind date was Moms Mabley. The opening was gruesome. I was prepared for the worst. Then..miracle of miracles! He made me enjoy a song I absolutely loathe! When the band kicked in, he took it to a totally unexpected and cool place. There were other decent performances tonight, but this was the only one that I PERSONALLY liked. I would probably buy this on iTunes but I don't think I can burn it to a cd, can I? B+

THE ADEQUATE:

3-Syesha "If I Ain't Got You". OK, but she frequently seemed JUST a hair offkey. And the run at the end was..um...bad. B-

4-David A. "Longer". Bland but servicable, once again with some ill-advised melisma. Nigel didn't do him any favors picking this one. B-

5-David C. "I Don't Want to Miss a Thing". What he missed was that last note, which he tried to save by sliding up to the right one. Once again, Nigel's choice shows little imagination. I don't find Diane Warren to be the songwriting genius that these guys do. Cook didn't bring anything new to the table on this one, though the Idol folks sure set him up to look good, didn't they? Liked the way the orchestra was set up on stage. B-

6-Syesha "Hit Me Up". Seemed like she was having a problem keeping up with the band. Lacked punch for such an uptempo tune. Not her style. For someone who's supposed to be such a hotshot, Nigel sure seems clueless about choosing the right music for these kids. B-


THE MEDIOCRE:

7-David C. "Dare You To Move". Dull Alt-Rock. This performance just laid there and did nothing for me. I forgot it as soon as it was over. C

8-Syesha "Fever". She did not give me fever with this. Actually, it was closer to hypothermia. She was no Peggy Lee. She wasn't even a Melinda Doolittle, who did it much better last year. I hated the way she messed with the syncopation of the lyrics. Totally neutered the sexiness of the song. This was a prime example of Syesha's game..a good singer, but not nearly good enough to tackle the iconic songs she attempts. C

9-David A "With You". I don't know this song, old fart that I am, but my granddaughter said that he muffed some lyrics. Despite the fact that HE chose this song, he seemed rather uncomfortable with it (or maybe Monster Dad chose it for him before he got the boot). VERY awkward. And how ridiculous was it hearing him singing lines about someone being his boo? And his dancing made Taylor Hicks look like Savion Glover. C

Interesting that, to my ears, the judges' picks served the contestants best, while their own choices served them the least.

I suspect next week will be the Colossal Battle of the Davids.

I also thought the judges' choices were way better than Nigel's, although Cook's was at least in the right area of possibility.

I agree on TBone's top two songs tonight. The rest were forgettable. Roomie thinks it should be Syesha and Cook next week, but I don't think she can sell tickets or albums the way the other two can (Cook now, Archie a few years down the road).

David Cook impressed me the most, and his "The First Time..." performance stood out. FWIW: It was Simon's choice. One of the tracks on Leona Lewis' CD is a cover of the same song, she being a protégé of Simon's from the X Factor show in the U.K.

David A's choice of "With You" must be strictly to appeal to the teen chick crowd, figuring they would go crazy for him even after a mediocre performance. Judges made good point that Dan Fogelberg's song would have been better sung by an older performer.

Syesha is continuing to improve but she was facing the clear top two this week.

I can't wait to read the Television Without Pity recapper's awe tomorrow, at Ryan's getting by with calling Simon a big ole queen. When Ryan introduced Cook's song "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," he said he couldn't believe Simon had chosen it for Cook. Roomie and I looked at each other and finally got it (TMI spelling-out part in spoiler tag below).

Ryan and Simon are always playing with this gay subtext, but that went a little far, except that a lot of people probably didn't get it, so maybe it's OK.

To be clear, I am not saying there is anything inappropriate about gay humor or being gay.

I am saying what makes it interesting on this show is that they have always played it as "a secret," and it would lose its interestingness if anyone ever came out.

My exposure to Fantasia is limited to when I have the misfortune of hearing her while flipping channels, like last night.

Like a horrific car wreck, one can not help but glimpse for a second before thanking God that you are not part of the carnage.

My point was that if you genuinely did not have any opinion, you would not have posted.

I appreciate the effort to avoid overexposure to celebrities, as I engage in it. If you had heard Fantasia's "Summertime" a few years ago, you would see her differently.
