Well, we are leaving in less than 2 weeks.
8 day bus tour (16 passenger) of the Highlands and whisky island (Islay) off the west coast.
The bus tour thing is different for us-we are on our own for meals except for breakfast.
Looks like lots of seafood (yum) and I am also looking forward to seeing a lot of lamb/mutton on menus. In Africa-I generally order sheep in some form if available.
Prob-no curry-yuck.
We have one day in Edinburgh on our own before. Plan to go to the castle and maybe a city bus tour.
But the highlight for me will be Armchair Antiquarian Books near the castle. I hope they are open.

I know that if you take the high road and I take the low road, I'll be in Scotland before you.

My folks are there right now. They piloted a longboat on a canal for a week, and traversed the Falkirk Wheel.

Edinburgh is magical but I enjoyed the outlying places like Ullapool more. The islands even more so. Did Skye, Lewis/Harris, and the Orkneys many years ago.
Glasgow was meh.
Scotch seemed more pure there - could throw down four and wake up the next morning clear as a bell. But I was also younger.

"A Gordon for me"-British army song
George MacDonald Fraser (GMF)-as in the other threads-was a Gordon-so I love the Gordons-plus bagpipes are my favorite instrument.
Downside-doesn't appear that the lass in the song waited for a Gordon.

Re: Scotland-Anybody Been?
Just remembered that another short story in GMF's "Private McAuslan" collection (in addition to the ongoing thread about the trivia contest) is about setting a ceremonial guard at the Edinburgh Castle in front of various royalty and dignity.
I have to re-read that one in the next couple days before we go.
