In the you learn something new every day line

#1 Post by Spock » Tue Apr 29, 2025 2:53 pm

I am reading a book about elephants in India called "Elephants in the Hourglass" and it has a map of all the subspecies of elephants.

I was aware of all the other subspecies, but I was gobsmacked to learn that there is a subspecies on the island of Borneo. The Bornean Elephant. It is endangered as you might expect in that part of the world, especially since the map shows that they are limited to a very small area in northeast Borneo.

Shades of a book I recommend to everyone-"Song of the Dodo" about island biogeography by David Quammen. A much more interesting read than it sounds like.

As far as "Hourglass"-so far I can't recommend it-a little too much "Oh, poor me" by the author so far. It is getting a little old.
