2525 - Fortnight 2 - Annum 3

In the year...

Follow the instructions after each event listed below. Two points for each correct answer:

E1 - A Stanford-educated engineer is sworn in as the president of the United States. Let's just say, things didn't work out for him.

Name the president.
How many terms did he serve?
Name the candidate he defeated a few months earlier.

Herbert Hoover
One
Al "That Catholic" Smith

I have a feeling there won't be any D or A questions today. Ha!

E2 - A future civil rights leader and Nobel laureate is born on January 15.

Name this person.
Name the state in which this person was born.
Name the state in which this person died?

Michael King Jr
Alabama
Tennessee

Ugh, for some reason I always think it was West Memphis, AK but I think that's because we were trying to get to Nashville one April and we were backed up clear to West Memphis...

E3 - An American tennis player defeats Helen Jacobs to gain her third straight Wimbledon title.

Name the player.
How many Grand Slam tournament titles did she win (+/- 5)?

Helen (Wills) Moody
I know Martina holds the record with 9, so 8

E4 - An American author publishes a novel that is a first-person account of an American serving as a lieutenant in the ambulance corps of the Italian Army.

Name the author.
Name the novel.
Name the war in which it is set.

A Farewell to Arms
Ernest Hemingway
WWI

E5 - A devastating financial event occurs that leads to widespread economic hardship and unemployment.

Name the financial event.
Name the month in which it occurred.
Name the day of the week on which it occurred.

Wall Street Crash
October (29 for extra credit!)
Tuesday

E6 - An organized murder of seven members and associates of the North Side Gang takes place at a garage when they are lined up against a wall and shot by four unknown assailants, two of whom are disguised as police officers.

What is the name commonly given to this event?
Name the city in which it occurred.
Who was widely assumed to have been responsible for ordering the hit?

St Valentine's Day Massacre
Chicago
Al Capone, who tried to make that town his own...ha!

Fanny Fun Fact: Bugs Moran, the target of said Massacre was late to the meetup, saw what he thought were cops entering the garage then turned around and walked briskly in the opposite direction

E7 - A college football bowl game between an east coast team and a west coast team was most known for an infamous play where one of the players ran in the wrong direction with a fumbled ball, leading to a safety that contributed to the 8-7 victory.

Name the winning team (take a bow, SSS)
Name the losing team. (Shortened name of another BB)
What was the nickname given to the player in the infamous play?

Georgia Tech
California (can't think of a BB for this one)
Wrong Way.... something, Reigel?

What year did events E1 thru E7 take place? (Five points)

1929

You hit my sweet spot on this one! I did my freshman research paper on Prohibition Era Chicago (I was mad that they required x number of quotes and footnotes and made sure all of mine contained profanity and/or gore) and I took a history class in high school called Between Two Wars which focused on all types of events in the 20s and 30s (crime was my favourite, duh!) I actually knew the entire campaign jingle for Al Smith at one point, but that was a long fucking time ago...

Total points: 50

JMJ, read for comprehension!

I thought I was going to ace this one and I haven't been able to preview my posts on this computer without it kicking me back out to the sign in page. So I don't actually read my drivel until I've posted it. Grand Slam, dumbass, not Wimbledon! The plus/minus of 5 should have clued me in on that...
