Pete Rose has died

#1 Post by Bob78164 » Mon Sep 30, 2024 5:50 pm

I guess now that Pete Rose has died, his "lifetime" ban from baseball is officially over. Does that mean the Hall of Fame can finally consider him for inclusion? --Bob

Not really a "Hall of Fame" then.

Pitchers caught using "stuff" on the balls, batters using too much pine tar or cork, probably affected the outcome of more games than Pete did. His betting affected a total of ZERO games.

That's not clear. If memory serves, Rose has admitted to betting on Reds games while he was managing them. Even if he always bet on the Reds to win, there are times when taking the long view requires you to give up on a particular game. Having bet on the Reds, Rose would have had a disincentive to take (or at least implement) that long view. --Bob

Pete was always one of my favorite players. He always played hard and looked like he was having fun. And I am 100% convinced that the Phils would not have won the '80 World Series without him.

BUT.

Since the Black Sox scandal, betting on the game was baseball's unforgivable sin. Pete knew the history of the game better than anyone and he knew that and yet bet on the game anyway. Under the rules of the Game, his lifetime ban was entirely justified. I don't think he will get enough consideration at this point to get in. It's been more than 100 years and Joe Jackson still has not been forgiven.

If you compare what Joe Jackson did to what Pete did and think they are in any way equivalent, you are Bent with a capital "B".

Go to www.mlb.com

"Vote for this year's best"..........Presented by MGM Rewards.....a f***ing casino!

MLB is in the tank for gambling. No question the reviewers in New York, the umps, everyone at the top, have made "things happen" to get certain teams to or through the playoffs.

Pete's lifetime is over. The ban is over. Put him in!

Not sure from the comment above whether you think Joe Jackson is deserving or not. If you're one of the many who still think he threw the series, I recommend reading Scandal on the South Side. If you've seen Eight Men Out, this book provides a more in-depth and researched look at the scandal and gives context.

Not to mention I believe Kenesaw Landis, who imposed the ban on Jackson, is among the least deserving members of the HoF.

And my opinion, which no one asked for, is that both Jackson and Rose should be in the Hall.

Was Charlie Hustle also given a lifetime ban against getting a RIP?

I'm one of those who eyeroll the RIH's for even the scum of the earth, but the intentionally generic death notice for Pete Rose (who I think deserved his HoF fate) is extremely puzzling to me...

Yeah, the hypocrisy in the league is so blatant now... and, ironically, the league is still blind to it.

Interference from the MLB front office has been pretty bad... but, unfortunately, it has been even worse in the NBA *cough*LeBron*cough*James*cough* and the NFL *cough*Tom*cough*Brady*cough*. To be perfectly honest, I haven't even watched a full professional game in years. The last sports event I watched from start to finish was Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals. I don't even remember the last time I watched an entire baseball game. Maybe the 2004 World Series, where the Red Sox finally broke the curse? Maybe the '95 World Series? Who knows? Who cares?

What a player! He earned that Charlie Hustle nickname!

Rest in peace, Pete.

Leaving aside the gambling issues, it really seemed to me (as best I could tell) that he was a pretty selfish human being. An enormously talented ballplayer, but not much to commend him beyond that and he did some real damage to some parts of the world he touched. So yes, I chose to be generic. --Bob

Pres. Trump announced that he’s giving Rose a full pardon. AFAIK Rose was never charged with a crime. His son Pete Jr. pleaded guilty to drug trafficking, which may explain the confusion.

Pete Sr. actually did serve five months in minimum security prison in 1990 for tax fraud (he failed to report income from signatures etc.). He paid a fine and the back taxes, and did some community service.

I agree that a pardon from this will not affect his chances with the Hall of Fame one way or the other.

I think I would elect him to the Hall. We could put him in a room with Ty Cobb and some other folks who were great players but not such great humans.

He was in prison when the Reds won the World Series in 1990. I always wondered what that must have been like for him.

I honestly do not know much about this (I have definitely heard the name but I would have to double check) but if they do they will probably wait at least 2 to 5 years for some of the steam to cool down before deciding anything so let's wait for that. The main purpose of a lifetime ban is to make sure no one plays again though so maybe it might happen.

shoeless Joe (Who I know more about, though had to double check since I never heard him called his last name) was part of a bigger ban and I feel like that is the biggest issue with his situation. they do not want to make it seem like they were forgiving the whole black sock scandal which really was a disaster. I feel like this will not be taken to the extent of that because of how deep that conspiracy went. either way though Pete Rose is a well loved player that definitely will be honoured in his death no matter what way the Hall of Fame goes.
