Russian former World Chess Champion best known for losing his title to American Bobby Fischer in 1972 in the so-called Match of the Century in Iceland. His loss ended a string of Soviet World Champions that went back decades. After the title match, Spassky received a poor reception when he returned to the Soviet Union and eventually moved to France in 1976.

Re: RIP Boris Spassky
That was during the Cold War, so Fischer was a hero at the time. But now we know that Fischer was batshit crazy and should not be anyone's hero.
And it seems like Russia has placed less emphasis on chess since the Soviet Union broke up, and there has not been a Russian champ in years. The current world champion is a teenager from India.
