Lyrically Speaking - 2/21/25

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Fri Feb 21, 2025 4:36 am

This is normally where I'd place the infamous "short phrases" game in the LSWE, but I decided not to do it this year... mainly because I think of all these great lines while listening to the songs at work, and by the time I'd think to write them down, they'd be gone an I'd always spend hours scouring lyrics at home to fill out almost all of the game. So in its place, here's yet another themed Friday game. I may as well have switched the Thursday and Friday themes this year so that there'd have been some familiarity with games past...

Anyway, the theme of this game has TWO elements to it... and you'll need to come up with both to get the three theme points. The first element is pretty simple, and you'll likely see it if you get just a few of the songs right. The second element is a bit trickier to spot, but hardly impossible. I will say that it seems the whole theme seems to be more common in modern songs (and in LSWE terms, that means anything post-80's). So it was a bit of a challenge for me to make a game that wasn't half songs hardly anyone would get. The theme and Krox credit will be judged on you getting both parts rights, but the Image Bonus just concentrates on the first part... so have your usual fun with that.

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 3 points for the theme...

1. When I was younger, so much younger than today

2. There's A Cross For You To Bear
Things To Go Through If You're Going
Anywhere

3. In violent times
You shouldn't have to sell your soul
In black and white
They really, really ought to know

4. Hello, hey you
Who said that?
Baby, how you been?
You say you don't know
You won't know until you begin

5. I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything

6. All around the world statues crumble for me
Who knows how long I've loved you
Everywhere I go, people stop and they see

7. Don't you love the life you killed?
The priest is on the phone
Your father hit the wall
Your ma' disowned you

8. No matter how hard I try
You keep pushing me aside
And I can't break through
There's no talking to you

9. Who's gonna pick you up
When you fall?
Who's gonna hang it up
When you call?

10. I got a certain little girl she's on my mind
No doubt about it she looks so fine
She's the best girl that I ever had
Sometimes she's gonna make me feel so bad

11. I ain't no psychiatrist, I ain't no doctor with degrees
But, it don't take too much high IQ's
To see what you're doing to me

12. Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street
Chicago, New York, Detroit and it's all on the same street
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings

Theme? (Remember, it has TWO elements):

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that fits the theme of today's game.

Image Bonus: What's the word on the street?

12. Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street
Chicago, New York, Detroit and it's all on the same street
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings

Truckin, Grateful Dead

Theme? (Remember, it has TWO elements): One: One word titles. I added the exclamation points because in Spanish you put one upside down at the beginning and then right side up at the end when the sentence is telling you to do something. "Truckin" doesn't quite fit, except it does if you make it say "Go truckin!" So second past is they tell you to do something.

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that fits the theme of today's game.

Escape! Rupert Holmes

Image Bonus: What's the word on the street? Because aberrant was the Word of the Day at Toastmasters, I declare it to be the Word on the Street today. This is an aberrant oakblue butterfly.

They really, really ought to know

"Shout" - Tears for Fears

4. Hello, hey you

You won't know until you begin

"Jump" - Van Halen

1. When I was younger, so much younger than today

Help - Beatles

Ha! Got this one, even though it's the same damned tune as every other song they did between 1962-66....+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

2. There's A Cross For You To Bear
Things To Go Through If You're Going
Anywhere

3. In violent times
You shouldn't have to sell your soul

They really, really ought to know

Shout - Tears for Fears

There was some stuff on 2 and maybe 3 that Earl erased when he jumped (ha! prescient points!) on the keyboard and made about 8485480956803 lines of plus signs. But I don't think I know #2 so O couldn't be bothered to start over...

4. Hello, hey you

Who said that?
Baby, how you been?
You say you don't know
You won't know until you begin

Jump - Van Halen

I think I might have dropped this Fanny Fun Fact before, but just in case. DLR got the idea for these lyrics from a newscast about a guy standing on the ledge of a building while people on the street yellled "jump!" Only in LA, man....

5. I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything

Roar - Katy Perry

Ripped off from Brave, which could also work here, although it's not used that way in the song. Have you ever seen the video of a split screen of people singing these two songs simultaneous? It's worse than Last Dance with Dani California and Sweet Home of London All Summer Long....

6. All around the world statues crumble for me
Who knows how long I've loved you
Everywhere I go, people stop and they see

Fly - Sugar Ray

7. Don't you love the life you killed?
The priest is on the phone
Your father hit the wall
Your ma' disowned you

Slide - Goo Goo Dolls

8. No matter how hard I try
You keep pushing me aside
And I can't break through
There's no talking to you
Believe - Cher

Best version of this by far was Adam Lambert. He sang this live in front of Cher and had her absolutely sobbing...

9. Who's gonna pick you up
When you fall?
Who's gonna hang it up
When you call?

Drive - The Cars

10. I got a certain little girl she's on my mind
No doubt about it she looks so fine
She's the best girl that I ever had
Sometimes she's gonna make me feel so bad

Hush - Deep Purple

I prefer this over Smoke on the Water about 48584033 times more

11. I ain't no psychiatrist, I ain't no doctor with degrees
But, it don't take too much high IQ's
To see what you're doing to me

Think - Aretha Franklin

I was just thinking (ha!) the other day that Dan Ackroyd is about the only one left standing from the Blues Brothers movie...

12. Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street
Chicago, New York, Detroit and it's all on the same street
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings

Trucking - Grateful Dead

This used to be my ultimate Dead song, but then I heard it so much I got tired of it and Casey Jones overtook it...

Theme? (Remember, it has TWO elements):

Could it be as easy as single word song titles that are verbs?

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that fits the theme of today's game.

Sing - My Chemical Romance

There are so many good ones, I was going to use Elected (because, Alice) but I was playing MCR in my car on the way home from bingo and when this came on I decided what could be a more appropriate krox for a game about songs?

Image Bonus: What's the word on the street?

Image

Note that they are all one word, because you know I'm a stickler on my kroxs and I had to search through to find one without any verb phrases. And, because you know how much I love my Schoolhouse Rock (although this was not a fave.....)

1. When I was younger, so much younger than today
Help! - Beatles

2. There's A Cross For You To Bear
Things To Go Through If You're Going
Anywhere
Stand - Sly & The Family Stone (I knew there were several "Stand" songs, one of which was a Lenny Kravitz song from the early 10's that was a Mecca CD fave of mine... but I knew nobody would know that one. Then I though, oh yeah, Sly & The Family Stone did a Stand song. I guess I'll use that. Then someone Kroxes REM, and I'm like "How the fuck did I not think of that one? Especially since I'd just listened to "Spam" just a few days before.....)

3. In violent times
You shouldn't have to sell your soul
In black and white
They really, really ought to know
Shout - Tears For Fears

4. Hello, hey you
Who said that?
Baby, how you been?
You say you don't know
You won't know until you begin
Jump - Van Halen (With apologies to the boys who missed the bus and the Parenthetical Sisters...)

5. I guess that I forgot I had a choice
I let you push me past the breaking point
I stood for nothing, so I fell for everything
Roar - Katy Perry (A frequent Mecca earworm, and it clicked when I heard the chorus just a few nights ago that I whiffed on a good match for my "Chrous Line" Tangredi game a few months ago with Eye of the Tiger...)

6. All around the world statues crumble for me
Who knows how long I've loved you
Everywhere I go, people stop and they see
Fly - Sugar Ray (I left out the last line intentionally because the last time I used it, more people guessed Gilbert O'Sullivan than Sugar Ray....)

7. Don't you love the life you killed?
The priest is on the phone
Your father hit the wall
Your ma' disowned you
Slide - Goo Goo Dolls (This may be their only salvageable song. They're definitely right up there with Hootie and the Suckfish for worst band of the generic rock era of the mid 90's...)

8. No matter how hard I try
You keep pushing me aside
And I can't break through
There's no talking to you
Believe - Cher (Another Mix 93.7 song from 1999....)

9. Who's gonna pick you up
When you fall?
Who's gonna hang it up
When you call?
Drive - The Cars (I used to hate this song with a passion, but I'd almost consider it one of my favorite Cars songs now....)

10. I got a certain little girl she's on my mind
No doubt about it she looks so fine
She's the best girl that I ever had
Sometimes she's gonna make me feel so bad
Hush - Deep Purple

11. I ain't no psychiatrist, I ain't no doctor with degrees
But, it don't take too much high IQ's
To see what you're doing to me
Think - Aretha Franklin

12. Arrows of neon and flashing marquees out on Main Street
Chicago, New York, Detroit and it's all on the same street
Your typical city involved in a typical daydream
Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings
Truckin' - Grateful Dead (I'll bet Jerry Garcia would have been pleased to know this song is now shopping muzak....)

Theme? (Remember, it has TWO elements): One word titles that are used as action verbs in the song (I wound up giving credit to anyone whose answer seemed to imply they knew this, even if not sepcifically stated)

Image Bonus: What's the word on the street?

This one turned out a little meh, probably because so many people took "word on the street" literally. But one of those words on the street wound up winning the IBB, and it was Krox who needs to go back to shcool....

I remember this one. The lyrics are close:

Fly:
Twenty-five years old,
my mother God rest her soul

Alone Again: And at sixty-five years old
My mother, God rest her soul
