Who has just pulled off the first unassisted triple play for the Cleveland Indians, since Bill did in the World Series of 1920.

The fourteenth in MLB history, and first after Tulowitzki with Colorado.

The first while I am watching the game on TV.

There have been fewer of those than perfect games (15 since 1900).

And two so close together seems a bit odd. As I recall Tulowitzki did it against those lovable sorry ass Braves, role models for the BBBL SABs.

Can't remember if Tulowitzki was a member of the SABs yet when it occurred last year. Don't think so.

I had Furcal after he turned his UTP....

The set-up for yesterday's play begins with Toronto Blue Jays' abysmal offensive performance of late (whaddya expect of a team which trades for the St. Louis Cardinals' third baseman??).

((Rolen plays like someone chronically just off the DL, Eckstein is on the DL, Vernon Wells is on the DL, and the Jays dumped Frank Thomas after realizing the third (!) year of the contract they offered in the off-season 06-07 was about to vest for a cool ten million))

So, with two on and nobody out, and not having scored a run since Friday, sending the runners was a reasonable idea, and they got a great jump - the back runner was standing on second when Cabrera came up from the dive which snagged the line drive.

The game, in total, was a return to old-fashioned ball, with two starting pitchers with great control, and if Gibbons had left Marcum in for the ninth, another rarity could have been achieved, a 0-0 tie at the end of 9 with both starting pitchers having gone the route. It was also the second game of a rain-out necessitated double-header. Jays did win in 10, so they can feel a bit mollified .

Another curiosity: With Toronto on the schedule for an inter-league series against Philadelphia this weekend, Phillies' advance scout Ron Hansen, who turned an UATP for Senators in 1968, was in attendance.

The SportsNet announcers did point that out during the game.

Rolen has been done for several years now. I was at the game when Rolen's career basically came to an end.... the night he ran into Dodgers first baseman Hee Seop Choi on 5/10/05 trying to beat out a grounder. He hasn't been even close to the same since....

Of course, Troy Glaus has been a real offensive lift for the Cards. I think he still only has one homer....

And while we're on the subject, I knew San Diego would kill off the shell of a player Jim Edmonds was (since PETCO Park is where lefthanded batters go to die), but I never dreamed it'd happen so fast....

Rumor says the Cubs may be interested in Edmonds.

This past weekend, I picked up Beloved Son from college in DC. Before returning home, took in a game at brand-spanking-new Nationals Park.

Easy to get to.
Great sight lines.
Terrific food (Ben's Chili Bowl, a DC landmark, has a concession behind Section 109).
Cool mascots - a dopey eagle, and 4 oversized presidents (Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln and TR). The presidents have a race from the outfield.
Lousy team. Go there when your team is visiting, you'll have a great time.

I know Rolen is done. I know about trading with LaRussa. I know about the career history of third basemen where you can last forever, or be done in a month, when the legs go.

In other words, I remember Fernando. Fernando Tatis.

But JP Ricciardi didn't send an E-mail to ask my opinion...

Well, at least when the Expos traded for Tatis, they were getting someone who had actually been productive the previous two seasons, and one who could reasonably be expected to be as good or maybe even better in the ensuing years. Who knew he was merely a product of the.... uh, how do I say it.... McGwire era in St. Louis?

There is no such excuse in trading for Rolen. They shoulda just kept paying for Glaus....
