Two Scorigamis in Two Weeks

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Mon Oct 25, 2021 1:25 pm

A scorigami is an NFL score that has never occurred in a game before. As of today, there are 1068 scoring combinations that have occurred in NFL games, some much more often than others. There's a twitter feed @NFL_Scorigami that tweets the chances of every game ending in a scorigami as the game progresses.

Yesterday, the Arizona Cardinals 31-5 win over Texas was Scorigami 1068, while last week's LA Rams 38-11 win over the New York Giants was Number 1067. Those were the only two Scorigamis so far this season. Last season, there were 11 Scorigamis, plus one in the Cleveland 48-37 playoff win over Pittsburgh.

Does the Cardinal game really count since there was only one NFL team playing?

Two scorigamis in two days! Number 1077: Dolphins 70, Broncos 20 (just short of the record for highest score). Then tonight, the Eagles beat Tampa Bay 25-11. (Go Birds!)

A playoff Scorigami yesterday.

The Texans beat the Chargers 32-12. That one occurred because Texans blocked an extra point kick on the Chargers' touchdown and ran it all the way back. So, the Texans got two points and the Chargers lost an extra point on the play.

I thought that was the super rare case of how a team can score a single point in football.

I wasn't familiar with any way a team can score a single point other than a successful extra point kick. But according to the site I looked at, in 2015, a rule change allows for a team attempting to kick an extra point, to score a safety. It seems that if the defending team obtains the ball and under their own power are in the end zone attempting to exit and get tackled it is a safety. Previously a blocked kick was ruled dead. That safety only scores the kicking team the single point they were attempting with the kick.

Also, if an attempting team were somehow forced back to thier own end zone while attempting an extra point, the defending team would get 1 point. Has never happened. Probably never will, unless intentional.
It is important to note that specific score outcomes are impossible due to the scoring rules in place. Specifically, results such as 1-1, 1-0, 2-1, 3-1, 4-1, 5-1, and 7-1 are not viable.

How often has a team scored exactly four points in a game?

I did not realize it was theoretically possible for a team to score exactly one point in a game, but barring that, I always figured four has to be the rarest beast of them all. I remember some very weird single digit scores in the early-mid 90's when offense was down and they added the two-point conversion, but never one with a four.

The rule has been around longer in college and has come up a few times. In this first clip, the video is good from the Oregon-Kansas State Fiesta Bowl game a few years back. The second one has a much longer explanation, but the video of the actual play isn't very good. BiT will be interested in this because it's from a Texas-Texas A&M game in 2004. Surprisingly, Brad Nessler was on the play-by-play for both games.

If the Texans had run the blocked kick back to the Chargers 1-yard-line, fumbled, and the Chargers picked up the fumble, tried to advance it and wound up back in their end zone, it would have been worth one point for the Texans. You're right; it will probably never happen.

In 1923, the Racine Legion beat the Chicago Cardinals 10-4. That's the only NFL game in which the losing team's only points were multiple safeties. There have been five 2-0 games and two 3-2 games, none more recently than 1938. In college, Iowa beat Penn State 6-4 in 2004, and Miami beat Florida 31-4 in 1987.
