Former Notre Dame football coach who made headlines when he was hired in 1981 despite no prior college or pro coaching experience. (He was a highly successful high school coach.) Faust followed the retiring Dan Devine and was unable to keep the program at the level established by Devine and Ara Parshegian. Notre Dame never won more than seven games in his tenure and suffered two losing seasons. His last game was a humiliating 58-7 loss to Jimmy Johnson's Miami team, which cost the Irish a potential bowl bid. Later, Faust would become head coach at Akron, with a similar lack of success at a lower level.
