Lost thread (spoilers)

#1 Post by MarleysGh0st » Fri May 09, 2008 8:23 am

Spoiler
A lot of action tonight, but I can't remember some of the characters who showed up. Who was the guy who appeared after John's birth and then got so upset doing the Dalai Lama test on him? He's been on the island before, right?

And the hospital intern? All I could think of was the Haitian on Heroes.

So now John is going to move the island???

And I don't care how macho Jack is, he's just had his appendix out, for crying out loud!

The first guy was the first other Ben met on the island. He was also one of the recruiters who convinced Juliette to do her work on the island. I can't remember his name.

The orderly was the guy who visited Hurley in the hospital, said he was a lawyer, and tried to get him to say the other survivors of 815 were alive. His last name was rather ominous.

Spoiler
If the Dalai Lama guy is really the same as the Other who was on the show last season (it's the same actor, Nestor Carbonell); he only looked a few years at most older last season than on last night's flashback. So either the laws of aging don't work as they should on the island (which would be no surprise) or that's the guy's son.

I definitely got the impression that Baby Locke knew the right answer to the test and decided for some reason (such as he smelled a rat) not to answer correctly.

I knew the orderly had been somewhere, but was this the only time he's been on or was he on during earlier seasons?

Is Claire alive or dead? Is Jack's father alive or dead?

So there is a time warp of some sort where Keemie can kill the doctor and toss his body overboard and have it wash ashore hours earlier.

My theory on how they will move the island. Get a big rope. Tie one end to a tree and the other end to Hurley. Tell him to swim as far as he can.....
In non-spoiler news, the producers announced that the final two seasons of Lost will have 17 episodes apiece instead of the 16 originally planned. Due to the writers strike, only 14 hours of programming were produced this season, so those other two shows will make up for the two hours "lost" during the strike.

Jack's father certainly was dead when he was being shipped home from Australia. If he's alive again, maybe it's that time travel thing. But since the island seems to be hospitable to ghosts, like Horace last night, he's probably one of those.

Claire was very alive last time we saw her, so it would be a cheat if she's now dead and they haven't told us yet. However, she now has that "I know something but I'm not going to tell you" smirk that's so common on the island, that would make me go postal if I were there.

I noticed something strange while watching the show last night. The sides of the picture were chopped off, as if it were being broadcast in widescreen and then the sides cut off to fit my screen (the cast credits and TV-14 rating box were only partly visible. I actually have a widescreen TV and the setting on the Direct TV box was for a widescreen TV as well. We have two different receivers feeding the TV in the living room and both had the same problem.

My wife said the same thing happened last week when she watched another ABC show, the Sistine chapel special on a regular TV set. I've never noticed this on any other shows on any channels. Is this just us or did someone else notice this last night as well?

People heal quickly on the island. Just ask Ben. In fact Jack healed rather quickly before in the very first episodes when the slice in his back that Kate stitched up healed up seemingly over night.

And besides, Jack has a war to fight...

The orderly was Matthew Abbadon/Abaddon (depending on the epsode apparently), a character that has shown up several times before and presumably is directly connected to the island. Perhaps he is the incarnation of the smoke monster as his name, Abbadon, might suggest.

Lostpedia defines "Abaddon" as the name of the biblical Angel of the Abyss (Revelation 9:11). The name is Greek for "destruction" or "the destroyer". As a place, it is likened to Sheol or hell.

Perhaps he is Jacob.

Perhaps Jacob and the smoke monster are one and same.

In any case it would seem he will be a central figure in the final story.

Or not.

The visitor to young John Locke was Richard Alpert, one of the Others and before that the "hostiles", who has appeared in multiple time periods looking the same. Clearly he appears to be an "important" other. How important remains at best unclear. The name, like so many in this show, is linked to a real person.

The time warp angle seems clearly established at this point. How and why it happens is not.

In this case it seemed a bit hokey and the killing of the doctor seemed to serve little purpose other than to suggest the movement can be either forward or backward in time. For example the earlier rocket test by Farraday suggested it took longer for things to get to the island.

This example suggested the body got there by going back in time. But the message from the beach got back to the ship by also going back in time. Or so it seemed.

Mucking about with time always seems rather problematic...

True, people heal quickly. But as Rose pointed out, people aren't supposed to get sick on the island, in the first place. Unless they get pregnant.

Let some of the socks fight this war; Jack should be on the injured list!

On the subject of socks, I'm beginning to wonder just how many socks there are left out of the group. There were originally about fifty, then add the people from the tail section (the only notable survivor of whom is Bernard) and you get about seventy.

But the body count rate has gone up a good bit over four years (both name cast members, socks, and semi-socks like the couple who was buried alive), counting a few more last week when the mercenaries blew a few lof Locke's socks away.

So just how many socks are left? I'm sure some of the Lost trivia sites can give an up-to-date running total.

I don't know, but wasn't the orginal number of survivors 42?

Were the actors playing the recent socks that got killed off part of the same cast of extras that have been playing them since the first season? Imagine wating around all that time, hoping for the chance to do something noticeable in front of the camera. Then their death scene takes up about two seconds and they don't even get to scream and fall down dramatically or anything.

Don't think that total takes into account the "tailies". Lost pedia says 48 original survivors plus 22 in the tail. Not sure if either number accounts for the "Others" who infiltrated the survivors.

And of course the Captain survived in the cockpit section until the resident smoke monster had a go at him. That makes 71 although for some reason 72 had always stuck in my head.

Not sure why.

IIRC 71 humans and one dog =72 survivors

Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.
