Saturday Night Live has announced its first set of hosts and musical guests for the upcoming 50th season. There's more attention to the show that usual this year because of the ongoing political campaign and the release of a major new film about the show's opening episode in 1975.
September 28 - Jean Smart with musical guest Jelly Roll
October 5 - Nate Bargatze with musical guest Coldplay
October 12 - Ariana Grande with musical guest Stevie Nicks
October 19 - Michael Keaton with musical guest Billie Eilish
November 2 - John Mulaney with musical guest Chappell Roan
This schedule is a bit of a departure from recent years, when they would schedule three weeks in a row and then take a week off. This may represent a desire to get in as many shows as possible before the election November 5. They have already announced that Maya Rudolph will play Kamala Harris in upcoming sketches. No word yet on who will play Trump. Cast member James Austin Johnson (who played Trump last season) and Alec Baldwin (who played Trump in 2020) have been mentioned. Steve Martin has said he will not play Tim Walz, although he will be appearing during the season.

The opening sketch on tonight's opening episode featured coverage of Harris and Trump rallies. In addition to Maya Rudolph as Harris, Andy Samberg played her husband Doug Emhoff, Jim Gaffigan played Tim Walz (a very good choice), and Dana Carvey showed up to play Joe Biden. Cast members James Austin Johnson and Bowen Yang played Trump and J.D. Vance.
I'm guessing next week, they'll "cover" the vice-presidential debate.
