Just looking at it it seems silly. Grown men and women playing games with a ball, running, for lotsa money, etc.
But every society, regardless how miserable the circumstances, play games. Balls, cards, stones.
It's sorta encouraging for the human race that not everything is life or death. Until it is. Unless it's the playoffs.

Yea Astros. But those silly Rangers don’t help at all this weekend. I think is was on purpose.
Glad to be able to watch the Texan tonight. They don’t get much TV time up here in the Cowboy's’ market.

Roman gladiators did not usually fight to the death. While some matches ended fatally, most were designed to entertain the crowd without resulting in death.
