This story is so bizarre that it would have been rejected as a movie script.

Yesterday, at lunchtime, there was a shooting at Peachtree Center in downtown Atlanta. It's an office complex with five high rises connected by aerial bridges with a food court underneath at ground level. There's a Marta station underneath. When I worked at the Georgia Lottery, I walked from that station to my officers about ten minutes away, and I ate lunch at Peachtree Center every week or two. Several people were injured in the shooting, and the shooter was arrested.

But that's not the story.

After the shooting, while police still had the food court area cordoned off, TV reporters starting interviewing bystanders. One of those bystanders was Joseph Grier, who told reporters he had been inside the food court when it happened. He said that when the shooting started he ran across the street and hid inside the Wells Fargo branch (where I banked when I worked at the Lottery). Grier mentioned he had a criminal record but that he might have been able to stop the shooting if he'd stayed inside the food court. Reporters said that Grier was talking crazy and had trouble staying on point. He also suggested that he was related to actor David Alan Grier.

But that's not the story.

Shortly after his press interviews, Grier walked several blocks to the main MARTA station where buses drop off passengers. There he hijacked a Gwinnett County Transit bus and left on a high speed chase that wound up over 10 miles away near Stone Mountain. Grier took a gun away from a man on the bus and ordered the bus driver to flee while the bus still had 17 passengers on board. The chase lasted about a half hour through rush hour traffic, and several other vehicles were hit. Police were eventually able to ram the bus to stop it and then board it and arrest Grier. One man on the bus was dead, presumably the one who fought with Grier over the gun in the first place.

And that's the story.
