Lyrically Speaking - 1/9/23

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Mon Jan 09, 2023 7:38 am

Welcome everyone to the 2023 LSWE! I guess I should start off by apologizing for not running LS last year after fourteen straight winters of musical fun.... but I guess I can make up for that oversight by making the theme of the first game the 12 best songs of 2022!!!! Yes, I'm sure you know all these great hits, and......

Wait..... why all the long faces?

Oh. Bad idea?

OK, how about I compromise. All 12 songs in this game were released in a year ending with a 2! Every xxx2 year beginning with 1962 and yes, including last year is represented by at least one song here. Good luck!

1 point for the artist, 1 point for the title, 1 point for the year it was released that ends in a 2....

1. I like 'em round, and big
And when I'm throwin' a gig
I just can't help myself, I'm actin' like an animal
Now here's my scandal

2. Other fellas
Call me up for a date
But I just sit and wait
I'd rather concentrate

3. Oh, let it rock, let it roll
Let the bible belt come and save my soul

4. If you're feelin' down
I just wanna make you happier, baby
Wish I was around
I just wanna make you happier, baby

5. Bright lights, the music gets faster
Look, boy, don't check on your watch, not another glance
I'm not leaving now, honey, not a chance

6. Hey baby, won't you look my way?
I can be your new addiction
Hey baby, what you gotta say?
All you're giving me is fiction

7. People go just where they will
I never noticed them until I got this feeling
That it's later than it seems

8. Making my way downtown
Walking fast, faces pass and I'm homebound

9. Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise
Throw out your frown
And just smile at the sound
Sleek as a shriek, spinning 'round and 'round

10. Your stare was holdin'
Ripped jeans, skin was showin'
Hot night, wind was blowin'
Where you think you're going, baby?

11. But I love you best
It's not something that I say in jest
'Cause you're different, girl, from all the rest
In my eyes

12. Don't want a four leaf clover
Don't want an old horseshoe

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist and year that was released in a year ending with the digit two. (5 total points for hitting a year exact, 3 for being a year off)

Spoiler

I'm back, Bitches!! That's right, often imitated, never duplicated. Get your ass ready for some Fun Facts....

1. I like 'em round, and big
And when I'm throwin' a gig
I just can't help myself, I'm actin' like an animal
Now here's my scandal

I Like Big Butts - Sir Mix-a-lot - 1992

For some reason, I always think of this as late 80s (maybe because I associate him with the Tone-Loc era?) but I know it wasn't 82 so I guess it has to be early 90s. Learn something everyday!

2. Other fellas
Call me up for a date
But I just sit and wait
I'd rather concentrate

Johnny Angel - Shelly Fa-bear-us - 1962

My sister used to (used to? Hell, still does!) call my nephew Marky Angel, so I always used to sing this to both of my nephews as Marky Angel and Tommy Angel (used to? Hell, I think the last time was this Christmas

3. Oh, let it rock, let it roll
Let the bible belt come and save my soul

Jack and Diane - John Cougar - 1982

Again, this was 1982??? I'm sofa king old. I was in the car at noon today and the Double Shot Lunch Hour was Hurts So Good and Jack and Diane. Yes, I listen to cool radio stations and, yes, I still belted out the lyrics like an American Fool. Ha!

4. If you're feelin' down
I just wanna make you happier, baby
Wish I was around
I just wanna make you happier, baby

Late Night Talk - Harry Styles - 2022

Seriously? All the great songs of this past year and you have to pick Harry Fucking Styles. All I can say is abcdefu. Because it's about damn time. Ha!

5. Bright lights, the music gets faster
Look, boy, don't check on your watch, not another glance
I'm not leaving now, honey, not a chance

Kids in America - Kim Wilde - 1982

Now this one I can believe is that old. Didn't she pass recently? I recently reading about her somewhere (People, maybe), but I can't remember why. For the longest time I thought Kim Wilde was a man, I guess because I mixed her up with Kim Fowler.

6. Hey baby, won't you look my way?
I can be your new addiction
Hey baby, what you gotta say?
All you're giving me is fiction

Everybody Talks - Neon Trees - 2012

I have nothing much to say about this, although I thought the lead singer was hot and my gaydar was apparently on the fritz. Although, of course afterward it was a case of 'well, duh...'

7. People go just where they will
I never noticed them until I got this feeling
That it's later than it seems

Hair of the Dog - Nazareth - 1972

JJC point for you if you get this....ha!

8. Making my way downtown
Walking fast, faces pass and I'm homebound

A Thousand Miles - Vanessa Carlton - 2002

Okay this one, I have absolutely nothing to say since she's neither not nor gay (that I know about)

9. Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise
Throw out your frown
And just smile at the sound
Sleek as a shriek, spinning 'round and 'round

Friday I'm in Love - The Cure - 1992

Okay, if we want to talk about hot lead singers....well, we won't be talking about Robert Smith....ha!

10. Your stare was holdin'
Ripped jeans, skin was showin'
Hot night, wind was blowin'
Where you think you're going, baby?

Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepson - 2012

It took me almost a solid minute to get Miley Cyrus' name out of my head and come up with the right one. I guess her 15 minutes must have ended. I don't recall hearing anything about her since she did that song with Owl City (the title of which I can't even remember) shortly thereafter

11. But I love you best
It's not something that I say in jest
'Cause you're different, girl, from all the rest
In my eyes

I Saw the Light - Todd Rundgren - 1972

This one is always hard for me to get because I always think of it as In My Eyes, since I Saw the Light was, is and ever shall be Hank Williams. Sr.

12. Don't want a four leaf clover
Don't want an old horseshoe

Be My Good Luck Charm - Elvis Presley - 1962

Yeah, whatever...

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist and year that was released in a year ending with the digit two. (5 total points for hitting a year exact, 3 for being a year off)

I was going to cheat and make sure I got the full bonus by going with a song from last year (I Feel Good by Pitbull), but I really don't have to, because the year 1972 means three things to me: The year my dad almost died (and technically did, very briefly. When he did pass I didn't know whether to be angry with God taking him at 67, or thanking God for not taking him at 33), The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and School's Out. I will magnanimously leave Ziggy to Hottie, because we should let all the children boogie, and take the ACG for myself Although, now that I thin about it, I think Be My Lover might also have been 1972 on Killer. I know that Billion Dollar Babies was 1973. So, I will take the easy way out and go with

Public Animal #9 - Alice Cooper - 1972

Because, me being me, my favorite song off of School's Out is not, in fact, School's Out....

Image Bonus: Show me anything from a year ending with a two!

Hey, it's from a year and it ends in two. And, although I found some real cute ones, I took at least five minutes to find the One and Only Original

8. Making my way downtown
Walking fast, faces pass and I'm homebound

9. Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise
Throw out your frown
And just smile at the sound
Sleek as a shriek, spinning 'round and 'round

10. Your stare was holdin'
Ripped jeans, skin was showin'
Hot night, wind was blowin'
Where you think you're going, baby?

11. But I love you best
It's not something that I say in jest
'Cause you're different, girl, from all the rest
In my eyes

12. Don't want a four leaf clover
Don't want an old horseshoe

I got nuthin, just dint want to be marked present

Well, then

One I know for sure, since I was clutching my handy legal pad and dutifully recording every song as Casey Kasem played them: Killing Me Softly, by Roberta Flack. 1972.

And when I'm throwin' a gig
I just can't help myself, I'm actin' like an animal
Now here's my scandal
Baby Got Back - Sir Mix-a-Lot - 1992 (I was pretty strict with the title on this one.... I've used it enough y'all should know what it's called!)

2. Other fellas
Call me up for a date
But I just sit and wait
I'd rather concentrate
Johnny Angel - Shelley Fabares - 1962

3. Oh, let it rock, let it roll
Let the bible belt come and save my soul
Jack and Diane - John Cougar (Mellencamp) - 1982

4. If you're feelin' down
I just wanna make you happier, baby
Wish I was around
I just wanna make you happier, baby
Late Night Talking - Harry Styles - 2022 (Of all the Mecca earworms, this was the only one I was sure was from 2022 and that didn't annoy me too much. Incidentally, that Pitbull song's an earworm as well, and I keep meaning to look it up.... not because I want to hear it again, but because it has some very LONG mutes during the singing part, and I've been curious what awful string of un-Meccalike language they're trying to pass off in there...)

5. Bright lights, the music gets faster
Look, boy, don't check on your watch, not another glance
I'm not leaving now, honey, not a chance
Kids In America - Kim Wilde - 1982

6. Hey baby, won't you look my way?
I can be your new addiction
Hey baby, what you gotta say?
All you're giving me is fiction
Everybody Talks - Neon Trees - 2012

7. People go just where they will
I never noticed them until I got this feeling
That it's later than it seems
Doctor, My Eyes - Jackson Browne - 1972

8. Making my way downtown
Walking fast, faces pass and I'm homebound
A Thousand Miles - Vanessa Carlton - 2002 (Ah, a classic Mecca earworm!)

9. Dressed up to the eyes
It's a wonderful surprise
To see your shoes and your spirits rise
Throw out your frown
And just smile at the sound
Sleek as a shriek, spinning 'round and 'round
Friday I'm In Love - The Cure - 1992

10. Your stare was holdin'
Ripped jeans, skin was showin'
Hot night, wind was blowin'
Where you think you're going, baby?
Call Me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen - 2012

11. But I love you best
It's not something that I say in jest
'Cause you're different, girl, from all the rest
In my eyes
I Saw The Light - Todd Rundgren - 1972

12. Don't want a four leaf clover
Don't want an old horseshoe
Good Luck Charm - Elvis Presley - 1962

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist and year that was released in a year ending with the digit two. (5 total points for hitting a year exact, 3 for being a year off)

I very quickly abandoned any plan I had of checking up on these.... so if you provided a song, artist AND year, and it wasn't something I knew was way off, you got the 5 points. Anyone who neglected to add the year for the standard 2 points...

Image Bonus: Show me anything from a year ending with a two!

I was hoping some people would go outside the 1962-2022 bounds of this game! I wasn't expecting some people to go to the toilet, though it was nice to see our good friend Kitty Sandwich again. Anyway, I'm giving the first IBB of the 2023 LSWE to Krox for going with a year (1002) I never would have dreamed anything image-worthy even happened in!
