Decades!

The 1960s

COMING & GOING - A Decades Daily double
In 1961, we lost two great American writers and also gained two. Inbound, 1961 saw the birth of two popular and accomplished screenwriters/directors. The first is a Best Screenplay Oscar winner known for his trademark fast-paced dialogue and extended monologues. When it comes to making characters talk, you want him on your wall. The second writer created one of the ultimate buddy movie franchises starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover and had an acting role in Predator.

On the outbound train, we have the American writer known affectionately as Papa and who was also known for his minimalist style. The other writer was called 'the dean of the 'hard-boiled' school of detective fiction' and the creator of the character Sam Spade.

Name the two writers coming and the two writers going: (two points each)

CATS & DOGS
Name the 60s TV show and the dog: (2 points each)

Name the 60s movie and the cat: (2 points each)

WILL & GRACE
She was a key figure in San Francisco's early psychedelic music scene in the mid-1960s, as the lead singer for a band that eventually underwent several name changes.

He is famous for being the bass player for one of the great rock bands of the 1960s (and all time). He is infamous for marrying 18-year-old Mandy Smith when he was 52.

Name these two rockers for four points each (remember the category).

LOVE & MARRIAGE
In 1963, an actress married her third and final husband. She and the host of a game show she frequented tied the knot at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas and were together until his death in 1981. She lived another 40 years.

Name the famous couple. (four points)

The first wedding of an Italian actress and an Italian film producer in 1957 was condemned by the Vatican, since the film producer was not yet officially divorced from his previous wife. In 1966, the couple revealed they had secretly married again — and this time, it was legal. They were together until his death in 2007.

Name the famous couple. (four points)

WINNERS & LOSERS
The LOSER team in this example is notable for being in first place in the National League since the opening day, 1964, and then suffering an unthinkable collapse during the final two weeks of the season. It is one of the most infamous collapses in baseball history.

The WINNERs went on to clinch the World Series in 7 games.

Name the WINNER team and LOSER team (four points each).

Bonus: What team did the WINNERs defeat in the World Series? (two points).

TV SHOWS & THEME SONGS
A popular early 1960s sitcom was known for its instrumental theme song. It did have words, written by one of the costars:

So you think that you've got troubles?
Well, trouble's a bubble,

Why not hold your head up high and,
Stop cryin', start tryin',
And don't forget to keep your fingers crossed.

Name the sitcom. (two points)
Name the costar who wrote the lyrics. (three points)

Decades!
