A headline that caught my eye

Famed Ferris Wheel Rolls South

Developer places winning bid for Santa Monica Pier attraction in 10-day eBay auction, plans to relocate it to Oklahoma

Yep, Oklahoma City is North of Santa Monica,
Suitguy is not bitter.

feels he represents the many educated and rational onlookers who believe that the hysterical denouncement of lay scepticism is both unwarranted and counter-productive

The problem, then, is that such calls do not address an opposition audience so much as they signal virtue. They talk past those who need convincing. They ignore actual facts and counterargument. And they are irreparably smug.

The writer of that headline probably would tell us that "south" is a state of mind -- his mind.

I'm actually kind of tickled that the wheel will end up in the OKC metro area, although I personally would rather have one of those old, elaborate carousels. (Maybe the ferris wheel will inspire somebody to buy one of those, too.) I was happy to read the last paragraph of the story in the Oklahoman, as a good chunk of the proceeds from the sale and the final day of ticket sales will go to two excellent charities, Special Olympics and Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Yes, yes, yes! I also found one in Idaho, not terribly far from Adventure Boy's little town:

As a little kid, I loved the one at Elitch Gardens in Denver. I don't even know if Six Flags still has one there now.

Alas, none of these seem to be for sale. I will remain hopeful that a rundown barn somewhere contains piles of boards and carved wooden animals in need of serious renovation.

Thanks to the glories of Google, I just found a company that specializes in carousels, both old and new:

Now I have a new goal. I just have to work out a plan and enlist a lot of other people (and their money) in my dream.

Good idea. As a salute to her future efforts, perhaps a life-size model of Annie (or Guinefort) could be included among the animals.

I don't want it just for my amusement, though. I want it for the city, so that children can have the same kind of delight I felt as a small child.

One of my best friends was married to a woman who carved carousel horses; she was quite good at it.
