RIP Sam Massell

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Sun Mar 13, 2022 9:56 pm

Former mayor of Atlanta who was largely responsible for getting approval for the MARTA rapid transit system. After his one term as mayor (followed by Maynard Jackson), he headed for 30 years the Buckhead Coalition, a consortium of business people that modernized and improved the north side of Atlanta.

The one thing that always bothers me:

Sam Massell never gets credit for what is now referred to Atlanta's Hartsfield International Airport. HE was the one who started it all. HE was the one with the vision. HE was the one who got the project started. But everyone gives Maynard Jackson all the credit, because it was finished during his term in office.

I knew Sam Massell. I grew up with his son. I was in his basement, as a teenager, with the Mayor and the Police Commissioner upstairs, as we smoke weed. Also, the first time I saw Genesis was at the Fox Theater. It was a midnight show. I was 15, I think. We smoked a doobie on the way and ate a box of Pecan Sandies on the way. As we waited outside, Massell's son (he was still the Mayor), was completed wasted and staggering in the middle of the road. The police got him and took him home. He missed a great concert.

Sam Massell has never in favor of "the City of Buckhead". And he's spot on with this. Hope it never happens. Not only was he the only Jewish mayor of Atlanta, he's also the last white mayor of Atlanta.

Sam Massell was an incredible public servant, when he was in office, and for the rest of his life afterward.

RIP Mr. Mayor
