Walk away with $300?

#1 Post by LoudmouthLee » Fri May 02, 2008 10:19 am

I just read somewhere that someone on the syndicated WWTBAM walked with $300. Is that true? Does anyone know when that aired, and what the $400 question was?

I remembered it was Walk in and Win Week, so I managed to Google it and found this transcript from the 5/20/2005 show at http://gameshow.ipbhost.com/index.php?s ... =7952&st=0
On Thursday, contestant Michelle Glover from Rockledge, FL, was very enthusiastic when heading into the Hot Seat, but went cold once she actually sat down.

She got her $100 question right. But then...

$200: In the kitchen, a small hourglass that usually takes between three and five minutes is called a what?
A. Egg timer
B. Toast timer
C. Pasta timer
D. Steak timer

Michelle asked the audience, and both the studio and AOL said it was A. Egg timer. Right for $200.

$300: Which of these types of footwear are usually at least 25 inches long and up to 12 inches wide?

She first used the 50:50 to get it down to galoshes or snowshoes. Then she called her father who went with snowshoes. Michelle went for it, and was right for $300.

Time ran out, and she continued into Friday's show with no Lifelines. The enthusiasm came back, but not for long.

$500: Longtime pals Matt Damon and Ben Affleck attended high school together in a suburb of what city?
A. Atlanta
B. Chicago
C. Detroit
D. Boston

She did not know and would have guessed Chicago, but chose to...walk with $300. (Answer: D. Boston)

I believe this is the first time in U.S. WWTBAM history (syndie or prime time) that someone has walked with less than $1,000. Can anyone confirm this?

May have been Charles Ray Fuller, 21, of Crowley. He seems to have a problem discerning the value of monetary amounts.

I remember this contestant. She probably is the only "terrible" contestant for whom I've ever felt sympathy. First, as a Walk In and Win player, she had passed no qualifying test, and it showed. Her evident education and/or life experience was totally insufficient to answer questions that most people would take for granted. IIRC, she was a single mother who needed money badly -- and $300 was enough to pay the electric bill.

She should move to LA. She's a natural for the Jawalk All-Stars.

The really scary part is she is more than likely eligible to vote.

I find it interesting that $300 is less than the amount at which TPTB are required to issue a 1099. Therefore, her $300 was probably "tax-free". If walking with $300 was relevant financially to her, the lack of taxes would probably also be so.

I'll believe that when I see it.

Wow, it took you a whole whopping TWO questions before you had to reach into the lifeline chest. Did you see that coming in the mirror?

Oh my. Not only is she not living up to her opening brag, but she's threatening to set a new low in the history of this show.

PAF: Michelle's dad, Willy, says, "That's snowshoes."

Michelle: "How sure are you?"

Willy: "Uh, pretty sure."

Hey Michelle, he won't come right out and say it on national TV, but it sounds an awful lot like your father's saying "Michelle, my darling, are you really THAT stupid????" If someone had the audacity to call me with this question, I'd throw the phone in the toilet and flush it. That is, if I didn't hang up as soon as Meredith was telling me I'm being called for the $300 question!!!

Michelle will return on tomorrow's show.

God help us all! She gets most of the questions right in the mirror, but can't even answer two of the three she got today right without having to ask someone else. If she walks below $1,000, I will never watch this show again....

OK, after taking about half a bottle of Zoloft, I'm not going to be harsh with you, Michelle. I mean, after all that practicing in the mirror, to have this happen must be devastating. I mean, it's not like you got cold feet on a few of the questions, you didn't even have the correct hunches, which would make a llama out of even the hardiest of walhals watching from their couch. But hey, keep up all that good work with helping prevent violence, you sure helped me to release my anger in a much more productive way, and I sure hope that you enjoy that life-changing sum of $300. Be sure to put some away in a tax shelter, and don't go too crazy spending it all at once, because before you know it, it'll all be gone!

I witnessed this first hand. It was a very painful 30 minutes for the audience. Poor gal lingered on each of the questions except the first. i believe she spent over 15 minutes on the Matt Damon question. And as I recall, her dad really didn't know the snowshoe answer since both had always lived in Florida. She guessed. Lucky for me she walked so there was time for two more contestants. I have always wondered what happened to the guy ahead of me whose time in the seat never aired. He won $25 K.
