RIP Sam "Bam" Cunningham

#1 Post by silverscreenselect » Tue Sep 07, 2021 9:31 pm

Hall of Fame running back with Southern Cal and, later, the New England Patriots. Cunningham's performance in the 1970 season opener against an all-white Alabama team coached by Bear Bryant convinced Bryant to start recruiting black players. Cunningham scored two touchdowns and his team routed Alabama 42-21 in Legion Field in Birmingham. Ironically, that team had the worst record (6-4-1) of Cunningham's USC career, but they beat Alabama and an undefeated Notre Dame team in two memorable upsets. Two years later, Cunningham led USC to the national title, scoring four touchdowns in a Rose Bowl win over Ohio State.

Age 71.

I never realized he was the older brother of former NFL QB Randall Cunningham.

RIP Bam.

Wow! I’m very surprised that I haven’t heard that before now either.
