Jamboree 2021 - Unit 4
May 13, 2021

Timeline!

Seven years bad luck - a double Timeline chain

The events in this chain, when paired and sequenced correctly, occurred seven years apart. There are two events per year.

Points awarded as follows:
One point for correctly identifying each year in the chain (10 total)
One point for each event matched to the correct year (20 total)

Note: The two events within each year can be placed in any order

Hint: Look for an obvious answer and build the chain around it (+/- 7 years). Once you have the chain in place it's much easier to match up the events. For instance, if you know one of the years is 1960 (it's not, BTW), then the chain could be built forward (1967, 1974...) and backwards (1953, 1946...). The start and end dates of the chain can be determined by the events.

Events:

Channel Tunnel between England and France begins begins operations.

CNN (Cable News Network) begins broadcasting.

King Farouk of Egypt is ousted by a military coup and General Mohammed Naguib assumes power.

Lethal Weapon, a buddy cop movie starring Mel Gibson & Danny Glover, is released in theaters.

Mount St. Helens erupts, causing massive damage to the surrounding area and killing 57 people

Paul Newman dies at 83.

Secretariat wins the Triple Crown: Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.

Skylab, the first American space station, is launched.

Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev tours the United States and meets with the president at Camp David.

St. Lawrence Seaway opens, allowing ocean ships to reach Midwest.

Supreme Court decides Miranda v. Arizona, protecting rights of the accused.

Television's first magazine-format program, the Today Show, debuts on NBC with Dave Garroway hosting.

The legendary racing driver Dale Earnhardt dies in a last-lap crash during the Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway.

Timothy James McVeigh is executed for the Oklahoma City Bombing.

Tonya Harding wins the national Figure Skating championship title but is stripped of her title following an attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan.

Truman Capote's In Cold Blood is published.

Two convicted murderers escape from maximum security Clinton Correctional Facility in upstate New York by crawling out of sewage pipes and digging through cell walls.

Two radicalized brothers attack the offices of satirical French magazine Charlie Hebdo.

Undefeated New England Patriots lose to the NY Giants in the Super Bowl (oh no!)

WrestleMania III is held at the Pontiac Silverdome, setting the North American indoor attendance record at 93,173.

Reminder: Two events per seven-year increment.

Total points: 30

1959
St. Lawrence Seaway opens, allowing ocean ships to reach Midwest.

Strange how I arrive at some of these answers.
There was an episode of The Twilight Zone in which the payoff was Khrushchev was in the U.S.and purchased a car that would force him to tell the truth. The show was not on the air in '52 or '59..this has got to be the year.

1966

Secretariat wins the Triple Crown: Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes.

1987

WrestleMania III is held at the Pontiac Silverdome, setting the North American indoor attendance record at 93,173. Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant was the main event. This was my starting point for answering, I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit.

Lethal Weapon, a buddy cop movie starring Mel Gibson & Danny Glover, is released in theaters.

1994
Tonya Harding wins the national Figure Skating championship title but is stripped of her title following an attack on her rival Nancy Kerrigan.

Events:

1994 Channel Tunnel between England and France begins begins operations.
