Lyrically Speaking - 2/8/21

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Mon Feb 08, 2021 7:36 am

It must be getting to the end of the LSWE, as I'm running out of ideas as usual! Time to turn to another critter of mine for some inspiration...

Image

The curious case of Mr. Fox! Those big, wide, adorable eyes distract you from a rather unsettling and vacant face. Mr. Fox tends to pop up everywhere, and yet... well, maybe I should let Mr. Fox tell you himself what his signature trait is on my blog. Go ahead, speak!

MR. FOX: .........................

And.... you've pretty much heard the entirety of Mr. Fox's expansive vocabulary. He doesn't say anything.... he just stares deep into your soul with those hypnotic, creepy eyes. Here's 12 songs with titles that Mr. Fox can appreciate.... and who knows, maybe even give a head nod to. Don't worry about making too much noise, you could even play this game in a library...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist...

1. I really feel that I`m
Losing my best friend
I can`t believe this
Could be the end

2. Take the children and yourself
And hide out in the cellar
By now the fighting
Will be close at hand

3. All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms

4. You were licking your lips
And your lipstick shining
I was dying just to ask for a taste

5. You're talking, it all sounds fair
You promise your love
How much you care
I'm still listening and still unsure
Your actions are lacking
Nothing is clear

6. We were victims of the night
The chemical, physical, kryptonite
Helpless to the bass and the fading light

7. I got a certan little girl
She's on my mind
No doubt about it
She looks so fine

8. Why don't'cha tell me someone isn't lovin' you?
'Cause you're my girl, some say it's no longer true
You're seeing some slick continental dude

9. Oh, don't it hurt deep inside
To see someone do something to her
Oh, don't it pain to see someone cry
Oh, especially when someone is her

10. Used to feel we had it made
Used to feel we could sail away
Can you imagine how I feel today

11. Just the two of us
And nobody else in sight
There's nobody else
And I'm feeling good just holding you tight

12. Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that would like you to keep your mouth closed.

I don't normally comment on these things before the answers post, but this is genius!

Not just that you could come up with that many silence references from TZ, but each of them uses silence in a different context!!!

This is gonna be almost impossible to beat for the IBB...

The Gwen/Adam/Blake was my choice for best SB advert this year, not that it was a really stellar field... second place was Marshawn hosting a Manning Bros ping ping to the death match, after all.

6. We were victims of the night
The chemical, physical, kryptonite
Helpless to the bass and the fading light

Shut Up and Dance - Walk the Moon

God this song is annoying. How many years has this been in steady radio play now? I had a few months reprieve when my "80s, 90s to today" radio station went to their annual all Christmas format November 1st, which I think I've ranted about before (whatever happened to Kazoo, anyway) but when I tuned back in sometime in January they were still playing the shit out this shit...

She's on my mind
No doubt about it
She looks so fine

Hush - Deep Purple

Featuring Chris Hemsworth's Abs and David lines....

8. Why don't'cha tell me someone isn't lovin' you?

You're seeing some slick continental dude
Used to feel we had it made

I was never that fond of this song, until Candy Crush started using it in their ads, now it's a mighty, mighty earworm!

1. I really feel that I`m
Losing my best friend
I can`t believe this
Could be the end
Don't Speak - No Doubt

2. Take the children and yourself
And hide out in the cellar
By now the fighting
Will be close at hand
Silent Running (Other Parentheticals That Aren't Mentioned In The Lyrics) - Mike + The Mechanics (Who copied off Brian Setzer's paper with that plus sign)

3. All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode (DM has a lot of really good songs that for some reason weren't popular here that VH1 Classic introduced me to in the 00's. This one was a hit here, and is probably still my favorite song of theirs...)

4. You were licking your lips
And your lipstick shining
I was dying just to ask for a taste
You Took The Words Right Out Of My Mouth - Meatloaf (I was shocked when I found this song, because I had literally completely forgotten it existed, despite getting some extensive play on the 70's station I listened to in the 90's...)

5. You're talking, it all sounds fair
You promise your love
How much you care
I'm still listening and still unsure
Your actions are lacking
Nothing is clear
No More Words - Berlin (This was the song that played on Mecca Radio Saturday night that bailed me out in coming up with a Monday theme...)

6. We were victims of the night
The chemical, physical, kryptonite
Helpless to the bass and the fading light
Shut Up And Dance - Walk the Moon (All my life, I've heard my Mom talk about her "Colorado songs," songs which were played all the time while she was living in Co. Springs with my Dad while he was stationed at Ft. Carson in 1973-74. With my Dad's blessing, she took a pair of solo trips out there last decade, and one of them coincided with this song's peak airplay.... thus it has become her one modern Colorado song. or maybe she just listened to the same station Earl did...)

7. I got a certan little girl
She's on my mind
No doubt about it
She looks so fine
Hush - Deep Purple

8. Why don't'cha tell me someone isn't lovin' you?
'Cause you're my girl, some say it's no longer true
You're seeing some slick continental dude
Don't Talk To Strangers - Rick Springfield (My blurb on Depeche Mode reminded me of Jessie, and I forgot all about her Rick obsession! I miss her LS contributions...)

9. Oh, don't it hurt deep inside
To see someone do something to her
Oh, don't it pain to see someone cry
Oh, especially when someone is her
Silence Is Golden - Tremoloes

10. Used to feel we had it made
Used to feel we could sail away
Can you imagine how I feel today
We Don't Talk Anymore - Cliff Richard (Everyone remembers Devil Woman, but this was his best!)

11. Just the two of us
And nobody else in sight
There's nobody else
And I'm feeling good just holding you tight
There's A Kind of Hush - Herman's Hermits

12. Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
The Sound(s) of Silence - Simon & Garfunkel (And of course Disturbed, which is one of my favorite covers ever. For as great as S&G [well, at least S] were, FOUR of their more popular songs got slammed out of the park by later artists...)

Image Bonus: .......................

This game might have produced more serious IBB contenders than any other! Hottie's foul mouthed kid [though it was kinda opposite the theme], jarnon's cone of silence [the best silence ref], even Earl's standard cat meme might have won any other game. Frank's collage of silent references all collected from TZ was too brilliant not to reward, though! He gets the IBB, and may feel free to shout it from the rooftops, if he didn't sever his vocal cords....

JJC Points:

Panic gets 2 JJC points for comfortable silence...

frank gets a supermax for silent bets, silent Endora, silent kids (yay!), silent Buster, and the man who just wanted everyone to shut up...

Weasel gets 3 JJC points for Terri Nunn and duct tape (OK, that sounds kinky...)

Krox gets 3 JJC points for making me look up a Buffy reference!

Vandal gets 2 JJC points for copying off of, and improving Weasel's extra credit...

TBone gets 3 JJC points for lost Teddys and for my new favorite restaurant...

mrk gets 3 JJC points for smartass vandals (not our Vandal, that's not his handwriting...)

Beebs gets a supermax for combining Ed Gein and pancreas alone...

Hottie gets a supermax for kids learning from their parents (and that's probably not all she's learned)...

Earl gets 3 JJC points for David Lines (which I'd totally forgotten), and for Jeniuses at work...

melly gets a JJC point for a nice quiet town...

jarnon gets a supermax for the cone of silence! Sometimes, a meme just isn't necessary...

Panic 25+2
frank 23+5+5
Weasel 17+3
Krox 14+3
Vandal 17+2
ear 6
TBone 23+3
mrk 29+3

Which four? I'm curious.

Which four? I'm curious.
The 59th Street Bridge Song - Harpers Bizarre (May be a stretch since it was the same year, but their version far outclasses the original)
Hazy Shade of Winter - Bangles (The girls at their rockin' best. The S&G version is, IMHO, terrible)
Sound of Silence - Disturbed (Mentioned above, I like the S&G version, but Disturbed's version is the only song I know capable of giving me chills)

and the one that most people would argue with me over...

Mrs. Robinson - The Lemonheads (I never cared for S&G's version, but the Lemonheads make it work by speeding it up)

I'm familiar with "Feelin' Groovy" and I'd agree that Harper's Bizarre did a better version. I'm not crazy about Disturbed's version of TSOS, but friends and my sons are, so there's that. I haven't heard the other two, so it's off to YouTube to see if I can find them...

OK, I"m back. Definitely The Bangles have the better version of HSOW. As for the Lemonheads's version of Mrs. Robinson, I think I'll stick with the original.
