Lyrically Speaking - 2/5/21

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Feb 04, 2021 8:29 pm

Any other year, this would be the final game of the LSWE... but not in 2021 where you get six weeks for the price of five! And our fifth installment of the player's choice Friday games asked you for songs that told a story. And once again, you delivered without a single repeat request..... well, kinda! 12 players sent me a song, and as always, I added one of my own. One artist appears in this game THREE times, and it probably won't surprise you who it is given the theme...

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist, 5 points for picking my song out of the game...

1. So we got in the red VW microbus
With the shovels and rakes
And implements of destruction
And headed on toward the
Police officer's station

2. And she walked away in silence
It's strange, how you never know
But we'd both gotten what we'd asked for
Such a long, long time ago

3. The ship was the pride
Of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin

4. And wasn't I talking to him
After church last Sunday night
I'll have another piece of apple pie
You know it don't seem right

5. He ain`t gonna let
Those two escape justice
He makes his living off
Of the people`s taxes

6. They've got cars big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old

7. But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away

8. Well, he got mad
And he saw red
And Andy said, boy
Don`t you lose your head

9. Somebody said he came from New Orleans
Where he got in a fight over a Cajun Queen
And a crashing blow from a huge right hand
Sent a Louisiana fellow to the Promised Land

10. Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina
Wicked and evil while casting a spell
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden
I was in love, but in vain I could tell

11. Well, I`m not the
World`s most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight
She nearly broke my spine

12. The little boy went first day of school
He got some crayons and started to draw
He put colors all over the paper
For colors was what he saw

13. And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood, I saw she was crying
And through her tears, I heard her say

Which song did I contribute to this game?

Kroxquo Bonus: Give me a song with artist that doesn't tell a story, or have a meaning, or have any redeeming value other than it's fun to listen to!

Spoiler
One artist appears in this game THREE times, and it probably won't surprise you who it is given the theme...

I'll bet it's me! I'll bet it's me! It has to be me! I'm such a story teller.

1. no, but it needs a Civil War setting to be truly great

2. Taxi - Harry Chapin
Wait, there's no mention of a marching band along Main Street. Boring...

3. Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot
I'll bet if they had someone as brave as my Billy, they wouldn't've sunk

4. Ode to Billy Joe
Hey, Billy Joe. You got it all wrong, The expression is "We'll CROSS that bridge when we come to it. Dope.

5. Take the Money and Run - Steve Miller Band
I'll bet Steve Miller Band never dressed this snazzy:
Image

6. They've got cars big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old

They've got a lot of things, but do they have a hero? No!!

7. Cats in the Cradle - Harry Chapin
Who is this Chapin guy? You call these stories? Where's the battle? Where's the fiancé? He'll never amount to anything.

8. The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia - Vickie Lawrence
Hey songwriter: they HANGED an innocent man, not hung. Hung has it's own meaning but, you know, modesty...)

9. No, but what's with all the Songs of the South. Where's Please Come to Boston. Where's Shuffle off to Buffalo?

10. El Paso - Marty Robbins
We did a concert in El Paso years ago. I was rockin' the look, naturally:
Image

11. Lola - The Kinks
This one belongs in the the thread about inappropriate lyrics just for rhyming Lola with cherry cola

12. The little boy went first day of school
He got some crayons and started to draw
He put colors all over the paper
For colors was what he saw

I'll bet he drew soldier blues, trapped on the hillside.

13. Billy, Don't Be a Hero by me, Bo Donaldson (and those Heywoods)
The greatest song ever written. Such bravery! What a story, what a song.
Here we are singing it and rockin' the bell bottoms:

Image

Which song did I contribute to this game? I'll bet you strongly considered #13 (the greatest), but ultimately, you chose #11

Kroxquo Bonus: If I Could Do It All Over Again, I'd Do It All Over You by my good friend Frank Zappa

It's no place for the old

Dang, I was hoping to get them all. Oh well.

I'm trying to think of songs that when they come on, I turn up the radio. Oh well. I'll just go with

Rubber Biscuit, the Blues Brothers

Image Bonus: Once upon a time.... The page I copied from is defective. They lured me in with this posted over the image in Google Images: THE STORY OF THE RAINBOW. She nearly broke my spine

Lola-The Kinks

12. The little boy went first day of school
He got some crayons and started to draw
He put colors all over the paper
For colors was what he saw

Dang. So close to running the table. I'm so disappointed, I can't even come up with a gag answer...but judging from your intro, this must be by Harry Chapin.

13. And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood, I saw she was crying
And through her tears, I heard her say

Billy Don't Be A Hero-Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods.

Which song did I contribute to this game?

Tough call. It could be #5..you use that one a lot. But I'm guessing that Bo's got some intel on you and he blackmailed you into putting him into this game, so I'm guessing #13.

They'll be no living with him now...

Kroxquo Bonus: Give me a song with artist that doesn't tell a story, or have a meaning, or have any redeeming value other than it's fun to listen to!

Surfin' Bird-The Trashmen. doesn't exactly fit the "fun to listen to" part for me personally, but the no "redeeming value" part certainly applies..

Alice's Restaurant - Arlo Guthrie

Well, you almost had a repeat entry....this is always my first choice for a 'story' song. But I decided that it was too much of a spoken word thing, other than the chorus. This usually plays on my way home during Thanksgiving and, if I get home while it's still going, I'll sit in my driveway until they whole thing is done.

2. And she walked away in silence
It's strange, how you never know
But we'd both gotten what we'd asked for
Such a long, long time ago

Taxi - Harry Chapin

3. The ship was the pride
Of the American side
Coming back from some mill in Wisconsin

Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald - Gordon Lightfoot

4. And wasn't I talking to him
After church last Sunday night
I'll have another piece of apple pie
You know it don't seem right

Ode to Billy Joe - Bobbi Gentry

5. He ain`t gonna let
Those two escape justice
He makes his living off
Of the people`s taxes

Take the Money and Run - Steve Miller

clap clap clap clap clap

6. They've got cars big as bars
They've got rivers of gold
But the wind goes right through you
It's no place for the old

Fairytale of New York - The Pogues

7. But there were planes to catch and bills to pay
He learned to walk while I was away

Cat's Cradle - Harry Chapin

All right, the two songs I know by Harry Chapin, except for the radio one which will be my guess the first third...

8. Well, he got mad
And he saw red
And Andy said, boy
Don`t you lose your head

The Night that the Lights Went Out in Georgia - Vicki Lawrence

9. Somebody said he came from New Orleans
Where he got in a fight over a Cajun Queen
And a crashing blow from a huge right hand
Sent a Louisiana fellow to the Promised Land

Big John - Jimmy Dean

10. Blacker than night were the eyes of Felina
Wicked and evil while casting a spell
My love was deep for this Mexican maiden
I was in love, but in vain I could tell

El Paso - Marty Robbins

Don't know what your contribution was (yet) but I know this is Sprots'....

11. Well, I`m not the
World`s most physical guy
But when she squeezed me tight
She nearly broke my spine

Lola - The Kinks

12. The little boy went first day of school
He got some crayons and started to draw
He put colors all over the paper
For colors was what he saw

This Don't Sound Like that Radio Song - Harry Chapin

13. And with her head upon his shoulder
His young and lovely fiancee
From where I stood, I saw she was crying
And through her tears, I heard her say

Billy Don't Be a Hero - Paper Lace

Take that, Bo Donaldson!

Which song did I contribute to this game?

Going with Lola Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald!

Okay, I know you wouldn't have added another Harry Chapin, I know you didn't clap five times, pretty sure Alice is Weasel (not sure why I think that) and Billy is Vandal. You don't seem like an Irish punk fan, so..... huh, now I'm thinking Sprots is Big John. Urgggh! Process of elimination says that when you have taken away the impossible what remains, no matter how improbable, Lola must be it although I think that's more of a TBone thing...wait a minute, wait a minute! I forgot about the Edmund Fitzgerald until I was going over my preview. And I seem to recall you being a Lightfoot fan....

Kroxquo Bonus: Give me a song with artist that doesn't tell a story, or have a meaning, or have any redeeming value other than it's fun to listen to!

Seaside Rendezvous - Queen

It always makes me sad to see Tardar Sauce, but this is too perfect not to use...

Which song did I contribute to this game?

#3 - Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

The song that has appeared in ALMOST every LSWE so far... I really didn't think it had a prayer of being left for me to grab, but there it was, so I made sure the bell got to ring another 29 times.

frank gets 2 JJC points for showing his paper to Krox...

Krox gets a JJC point for copying off of frank's paper...

Weasel gets 3 JJC points for wolf food...

Bo Donaldson is ineligible to play the LSWE since he has inside information (and I don't mean being hung), so I had to give his supermax to Vandal instead...

mrk gets 3 JJC points for anti-Florida and "All Star" Episode VII (It cracked me up regardless, but is there a connection with Star Wars I'm missing there?)...

TBone gets 2 JJC points for the politician whose nose we can always trust...

Earl gets a supermax for clap clap clap clap clap, Grumpy Puss, and for showing her successful work...

No connection. It was a fad a few years ago to take the rolling Star Wars intro crawl and see who could put the funniest narrative with it. I just thought this one was the funniest. And what started me thinking about Star Wars was you using the phrase "Once upon a time" since that's just another way of saying "A long time ago in a galaxy far far away..."
