Lyrically Speaking - 1/24/20

#1 Post by littlebeast13 » Thu Jan 23, 2020 11:54 pm

Let's avoid any possible shenanigans tomorrow morning and go ahead and get the Friday game posted now!

For this weekend's game, I chose 12 songs that were made famous by one artist, but were actually written by another famous artist who had plenty of pop success. I already knew a few offhand, and did some research to fill out the game and made some discoveries that certainly surprised me. Most of these songs are well known for being written by another big shot in the music industry, but a few aren't as common kowledge. All of these songs were either not recorded by the songwriter, were not a hit for the songwriter, or in one case completely (and unfairly) upstaged the original songwriter's hit. In all of the songs below, the famous artist has sole songwriting credit. Had I veered into songs where one famous artist was merely the main songwriter among a group of creditees.... boy would that have been an interesting game. Paul Shaffer co-wrote "It's Raining Men".... who knew!?!? (Note: I won't hold you to the single songwriter qualification for the Krox)

1 point for the title, 1 point for the artist known for recording it, and 1 point for the famous songwriter...

1. I thought love was more or less a givin' thing
Seemed the more I gave the less I got

2. Madman drummers, bummers
Indians in the summer
With a teenage diplomat

3. But I can't be late
'Cause then I guess I just won't get paid
These are the days
When you wish your bed was already made

4. Did I hear you say that there must be a catch
Will you walk away from a fool and his money?

5. If I should stay,
I would only be in your way.
So I'll go, but I know
I'll think of you ev'ry step of the way.

6. You knew someday I'd have a whole lotta money
I'd be a millionaire
But when that didn't happen overnight
I found out how much you really cared

7. Hello lamppost, What cha knowing?
I've come to watch your flowers growing.
Ain't cha got no rhymes for me?

8. For so many years I thought I'd never find you
You have come into my life and made me whole
Forever let me wake to see you each and every morning
Let me hear you whisper softly in my ear

9. And maybe it's the time of year
Yes and maybe it's the time of man
And I don't know who I am
But life is for learning

10. And I'm sure going to give you a try
And if you want I'll try to love again
Baby I'll try to love again but I know

11. There must be some kind of way outta here
said the joker to the thief

12. So if you look in my direction
And we don't see eye to eye,
My heart needs protection and so do I.

I Will Always Love You-Whitney Houston/Dolly Parton. For me, Dolly's understated version is so much better...really brings out the emotion and heartache of the lyrics, in contrast to Whitney's over the top bellowing which blasts the listener into submission...typical of the modern-day "singer" who is more intent on dazzling with technique than on conveying, or even thinking about, what the lyrics are saying. Yes, I Will Always Hate Whitney's Verrrrrssssioooonnnnnnnn..

The First Cut Is The Deepest-Rod Stewart/Cat Stevens. This was also a minor hit for a guy named Keith Hampshire that predated Rod's much bigger hit. There goes my Cat Stevens Kroc...he also wrote Here Comes My Baby by The Tremeloes.

(OK, it just inspired one line of a song. But I bring it up because Beyoncé, who's not a math Ph.D. IIRC, may not realize that "to infinity and beyond" is paradoxical. By definition there's nothing beyond infinity. Like "colder than absolute zero," "faster than light," and "before the Big Bang," "beyond infinity" is in the realm of philosophy and science fiction, not reality.)

Contrary to the theme of this game, each of the answers in this post are original with the author hereof.
1. I thought love was more or less a givin' thing
Seemed the more I gave the less I got

2. Madman drummers, bummers
Indians in the summer
With a teenage diplomat

Blinded by the Light, Manfred Mann Earth Band, Bruce Springsteen

Stardust, Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Joni Mitchell

10. And I'm sure going to give you a try
And if you want I'll try to love again
Baby I'll try to love again but I know

I'm A Believer - Monkees (or Smashmouth) - written by Neil Diamond

2. Madman drummers, bummers
Indians in the summer
With a teenage diplomat
Blinded By The Light - Manfred Mann - written by Bruce Springsteen (A famously vicarious only #1 for The Boss)

3. But I can't be late
'Cause then I guess I just won't get paid
These are the days
When you wish your bed was already made
Manic Monday - Bangles - written by Prince (What a surprise that Prince was dreaming of kissing Rudy Valentino....)

4. Did I hear you say that there must be a catch
Will you walk away from a fool and his money?
Come And Get it - Badfinger - Paul McCartney (Only Paul was acceptable here. If you added John, you lost a point)

5. If I should stay,
I would only be in your way.
So I'll go, but I know
I'll think of you ev'ry step of the way.
I Will Always Love You - Whitney Houston - written and originally a hit by Dolly Parton (Fanny taught me in chat that Dolly originally did this song... and it's so much better than Whitney's glass shattering vocal theatrics)

6. You knew someday I'd have a whole lotta money
I'd be a millionaire
But when that didn't happen overnight
I found out how much you really cared
I've Done Everything For You - Rick Springfield - written by Sammy Hagar (Sammy's a legend in the STL, so his version actually gets some radio airplay. And it's the only reason I knew it was originally his song...)

7. Hello lamppost, What cha knowing?
I've come to watch your flowers growing.
Ain't cha got no rhymes for me?
The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy) - Harpers Bizarre - written by Paul Simon (I accepted S&G as the artists [their version did not chart], though it killed your chance of getting the songwriter... which again had to be Paul Simon alone. Not his lazy ass, rat's nest haired partner...)

8. For so many years I thought I'd never find you
You have come into my life and made me whole
Forever let me wake to see you each and every morning
Let me hear you whisper softly in my ear
Lady - Kenny Rogers - written by Lionel Richie (And he had a hit with the Commodores at the same time by the same title...)

9. And maybe it's the time of year
Yes and maybe it's the time of man
And I don't know who I am
But life is for learning
Woodstock - Crosby Stills & Nash - written by Joni Mitchell (Who wasn't even at Woodstock...)

10. And I'm sure going to give you a try
And if you want I'll try to love again
Baby I'll try to love again but I know
First Cut Is The Deepest - Rod Stewart (or Sheryl Crow) - written by Cat Stevens

11. There must be some kind of way outta here
said the joker to the thief
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix - written by Bob Dylan

12. So if you look in my direction
And we don't see eye to eye,
My heart needs protection and so do I.
Lotta Love - Nicolette Larsen - written by Neil Young

Kroxquo Bonus: Name another song with artist that was originally written by another famous artist who didn't have a hit with it (And make sure to name the songwriter for 3 total points).

I can get a bit lazy at verifying Kroxes from time to time.... but I did check out all of the Kroxes in this game to ensure the song was written by who you had claimed. Good job everyone! Only Sprots screwed this one up...

Image Bonus: Gee, songwriters make for boring image bonuses. So instead, pick any famous song from pop music history and show me an image that could have been the inspiration behind it.

Lots of inspired images for this one! I think I actually figured out mrk's puzzler about five seconds after I gave up on it. And Anon has probably guaranteed himself of never winning another IBB ever. My choice for the bonus points is frank's monkey ass! Bring out Mr. Bass Man!
