Grandchildren are great in many ways, but believe it or not I think mine may help me with my next J! audition. How? you may ask. And my answer is this:

Last night elwing and I were "tag-team" babysitting Caden while we were at the local fitness center - I did my thing while she watched him, then she did her thing while I watched him. And I noticed that whenever he smiled at me I would smile back. "Of course" you say. But then it dawned on me that I actually had to go through the effort to smile, meaning that my normal expression must not be all that cheerful. I had never really thought about that before; I consider myself friendly enough, if somewhat standoffish (because I'm an introvert). But in thinking back over my previous J! auditions it occurred to me that beforehand, and during the time waiting for the test results I would sit with a blank stare on my face, or else grab my pen and crossword puzzle. Anything so as not to interact. But if the J! people are watching (and some have suggested that they do keep an eye on the people gathering before the session), they're looking for interesting people. My appearance also might come across as arrogant and/or smug. So the next time (and there WILL be a next time) I do the J! thing, I'll make an effort to look more friendly at the very least.

This is a good idea, Ear, but I think you should practice smiling every day -- in all kinds of places and with all kinds of people. The more you do it, the easier it will become -- and you may discover that it will make a greater difference in your life than getting on Jeopardy!

A good suggestion - I think I need to put up a mirror in my cubicle and watch myself. Also I should get a picture of my grandson and hang it also, to give me something to smile about.
