Lyrically Speaking: Impossible 80s
Well, after two straight fastballs right down the middle, here comes an 85mph curve ball. Let's see how you do with these songs taken from my favorite music time period, the 80s. (For the record, I own a copy of every single one of these songs, either on CD, cassette tape, or vinyl 45.) And while I think that these are mostly obscure in that you probably don't hear these on the radio any more, they all got a fair amount of airplay back then, either on the radio or on MTV. (Hey, remember when MTV used to play music that you could actually listen to you? Yeah, I hardly remember those days, either.)
1. It's a song of assassins
Ringin' in your ears
We got terrorists thinking
Playing on fears
2. I come to steal with stealth
In the night
You got the sugar to satisfy
I am the man you can never deny
3. Yeah, how was your day today?
Did you miss me?
(Never be the same)
You did? Yeah? I missed you too
I missed you so much I followed you today
4. We got the message
I heard it on the airwaves
The politicians
Are now DJs
5. And now as I stand
And stare into your eyes
I see safety there
I want surprises
6. On every corner I can see them there
They don't know my name, they don't know my kind
They're after you with their promises (Promises of love)
They're after you to sign your life away (Yeah, yeah-oh)
7. And school's out early and soon we'll be learning
And the lesson today is how to die
8. She keeps rings on her fingers
Marble on her floor
Cocaine on her dresser
Bars on her doors
9. Travellin' the world, you're in search of no good
But I'm sure you're philosophic like I knew you would
Using all the good people for your gallant slaves
As your little boat struggles through the the warning waves
10. Nothin' more to be said
Write me a letter instead
I don't mean to be cruel
But I'm finished with you
Bonus: Despite being a #1 hit in 30 different countries, song #7 wasn't even a top-40 hit in the United States. Why not?
Double Bonus: What was the unusual name of the lead singer for song #10, and what was the name of his even more unusual character that he oftened played onstage during concerts?
Final Bonus: Censors didn't like the reference to cocaine in the lyrics for song #8 because they felt that it promoted drug use. (But Eric Clapton's "Cocaine" is still getting airplay today, uncensored. Go figure.) What was "cocaine" replaced with in the censored version?

Being an 80's fan and watching a lot of VH1-Classic, I thought I'd have a leg up on this one, but I pretty well struck out instead....

This IS impossible! I thought I'd do better, but I'll just go with the paltry few things I could scrape together...

Welcome to the Boomtown (thanks for putting the other one first!), some one-hit wonder

Ship of Fools! World Party. I love this. I posted the lyrics along with the list of candidates vying for Grey Davis's seat once.

Talk to You Later, The Tubes
Bonus: Despite being a #1 hit in 30 different countries, song #7 wasn't even a top-40 hit in the United States. Why not?
It was about actual school shootings (I think in California), and they asked the girl why she did it (I don't like Mondays was her answer) and they didn't play it because they didn't want to encourage copycats.
Double Bonus: What was the unusual name of the lead singer for song #10, and what was the name of his even more unusual character that he oftened played onstage during concerts?
Huh. This doesn't ring ANY bells!

I just remember them blanking it out totally on my stations. Alas.

Well, now that I know what #7 is (And I should have known it to start with), I'd say the real answer to the bonus is that the song absolutely SUCKS! I hate it with a passion, and they always play it on VH1C to further make me hate it. My favorite joke answer in the Winter LS I ran a few months ago was when fanny responded to not knowing "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" in Kitty Sandwich's game with a made up group called The Shithouse Rats. She almost got the first ever humor point I would have awarded for that, whether ot not she had really intended to insult that God-awful bunch that gave us "I Don't Like Mondays".....minimetoo26 wrote:7. 1. Nope
2. The Honeythief - Hipsway. I have this 45.
3. The Rain - Oran "Juice" Jones. I have this one, too. And, I hear this quite a bit on XM's 80s on 8 station.
4. Nope
5. Brand New Lover - Dead Or Alive. Yep.
6. Nope
7. I Don't Like Mondays - Boomtown Rats. I don't have this one but I know it well enough. I heard it on the radio the other day with my 12-year old in the car. He called it Typical 80s in a derogatory way. Of course, Typical 80s is, in my view, great. So I threatened to kill him. OK, not literally, but I think I'm starting to act like my grandfather did when I would visit him and my grandmother back in the 70s and he'd put on his WWII music and tell me how great it was. But I digress....
8. Welcome to the Boomtown - David + David. THANK YOU!! I have this 45 but I-Tunes has never had it (I've searched quite a few times), but after seeing these lyrics, I checked again and, voila!, it's there. And now on my Ipod.
9. Ship of Fools - World Party. Another obscure song that I have as a 45. I'm waiting to see if the next one is Oingo Boingo or Lone Justice or Alexander O'Neal....
10. None of the ones I mentioned above I fear because it's a big fat nope for me.
Bonus #1 - Was it never released as a single? Maybe that's why I don't have the 45. Other than that, I don't know.
Bonus #2 - Since I don't know #10, I have no clue.
Bonus #3 - I only know the cocaine version. I whiffed on the bonuses!

I assume it's because the subject matter was too controversial for US radio.
Double Bonus: What was the unusual name of the lead singer for song #10, and what was the name of his even more unusual character that he oftened played onstage during concerts?
Fee Waybill, who often showed up in platforms and various other regalia as "Quaalude". Sirge, Lady G. and I saw these guys for free on Fremont St. in Vegas a few years back...

Bonus: Despite being a #1 hit in 30 different countries, song #7 wasn't even a top-40 hit in the United States. Well the shooting did take place in the US, but let's face it, the Rats never really had a hit over here.
Double Bonus: Fee Waybill
Final Bonus: Censors didn't like the reference to cocaine in the lyrics for song #8 because they felt that it promoted drug use. (But Eric Clapton's "Cocaine" is still getting airplay today, uncensored. Go figure.) What was "cocaine" replaced with in the censored version? They replaced it with JJ cale

BECAUSE IT WAS BASED ON AN ACTUAL SCHOOL SHOOTING INCIDENT IN THE USA AND WAS THEREFORE CONSIDERED IN POOR TASTE.
OR ONE COULD SAY THAT IT WASN'T A BIG HIT IN THE USA BECAUSE IT WASN'T PLAYED ON THE RADIO MUCH IN THE USA, AND IT WASN'T PLAYED ON THE RADIO MUCH BECAUSE IT WASN'T A HIT. IT TENDS TO BE A VICIOUS CIRCLE.

I am not particularly surprised at having missed #7, given that I remember exactly four words (the title). I am very surprisded it did not make Top 40.
My question.
Did it make position 41, or anywhere in the forties ?
I have the possible impression that in the pre-point-of-sale days, there might have been manipulation of the Billboard charts not only to make the record trajectories interesting, which IIRC is documented, but to keep some records out of the top 40 portion of the Hot 100, which might have had the effect of making it easier for Management to keep them from local play.
"I Can't Control Myself" by the Troggs is the index case which makes me wonder. Peaked at #41. IIRC.

The Tubes - Talk To Ya Later
Bonus: Despite being a #1 hit in 30 different countries, song #7 wasn't even a top-40 hit in the United States. Why not?
Fearing that the song might spark similar incidents, it was banned from US radio. However, it still got a lot of play on MTV, and it's included in just about every 80s compilation CD set. I gave partial credit for several answers that were close but didn't quite hit the mark.
Double Bonus: What was the unusual name of the lead singer for song #10, and what was the name of his even more unusual character that he oftened played onstage during concerts?
Fee Waybill, and the character was "Quay Lewd". The Tubes were the original masters of outrageous concerts, including nudity, simulated sex, and even ran a promotion where anybody who showed up naked got in free.
"Cheap Thrills". Seems that I'm the only one who heard the radio version. I hated the change, and I still don't understand the need to censor it when the whole song is about people self-destructing. (Promoting "benefits" of cocaine and saying that cocaine doesn't lie? Yeah, you're good. By the way, there's a call holding for the kettle on line 2. It's the pot.)
