Character actor who was a staple on 60s and 70s TV and movies, usually playing cops and hoods. He was a friend of Steve McQueen and played McQueen's partner in Bullitt, as well as the hapless ex-con that Dick Van Dyke frames for his wife's murder in an episode of Columbo.
