For Warren Betty's sake I hope it is #2 above as his only mistake was not questioning the contents because he and Faye knew what award they were giving and if the envelope actually said "Best Actress Winner" on the outside, they should have seen/read that first. Either way, I will not fault him.

No one looks at that side of the envelope, as they have to deal with the seal, which is on the other side (on the flap). He noticed something was off, but FD blurted out the "winner" before he had a chance to verify anything.

I've seen a still that I believe to be genuine. The outside of the envelope in his hand said Best Actress in a Leading Role. He obviously knew that something was wrong but didn't think to check the outside of the envelope to confirm that what he'd been handed is what he expected. Hard to fault him for that. --Bob

You could see him looking in the envelope as if he thought another slip might be in it. He knew it said "Best Actress" when he handed it to Faye.

Well, we now have another Oscars gaffe, and this one can be blamed, at least in part, on Jimmy Kimmel.

During the show, they brought a group of people from a local tour bus out in front of the crowd. Perhaps the most visible of them was a man later identified as "Gary from Chicago," who, along with his fiancée, had their picture taken with Denzel Washington (who "married" them on the spot).

Well, it turns out that Gary has just gotten out of the slammer after serving 20 years on various felonies. Some of these must have been sexual in nature, since he's also a registered sex offender. Gary now claims he's got his life in order.
